There is a lot more to the fibre conversation, but these are the basics.

We should be aiming for a variety of high-fibre foods (including but not limited to veggies!), ultimately getting us to a total of about 30g per day.

Tracking your diet for a few days can help you figure out your baseline, but during my dietary assessments I find that patients are typically getting half that much which is in line with our health statistics.

So assuming you need another 15 g of fibre per day is usually a good place to start.

If adding more fibre causes uncomfortable digestive symptoms, let’s talk.

Your diet isn’t working for you, friend. ❤️

“Low carb” doesn’t always mean low risk.

Hidden fats, no fibre, and zero balance can send cholesterol way up, fast.

I get why people try keto or carnivore: gut issues, weight loss, wanting to feel better. But we shouldn’t fix one problem while putting heart health at risk.

If you need help navigating this, let’s talk.

Remember, this is just ONE of the many reasons for midlife weight gain, but it’s an important one!

I’ll explain how to increase protein as a percentage of total calories without increasing total calories (as well as the other reasons for midlife/perimenopause weight gain) as part of my talk on March 26 at ABHC in Okotoks which is filling up fast.

Let me know if you want the link to register or you can find it in my bio.

If you have access to your MyAlberta Health account, and do yearly-ish bloodwork, you likely have had your hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) tested. This assesses how well you’ve been regulating your blood sugar levels over the past 3 months.

The diagnostic criteria for type 2 diabetes is a HbA1c >6.5% (prediabetes is 6.0-6.4%), a fasting glucose >7, or a random glucose >11.1.

But even before we get to prediabetes, we can see signs that things need to change. This is where lifestyle changes can have the biggest impact!

I’ve had patients whisper things to me like they’re confessing a crime: what they eat, whether they’re on meds, if they’re vaccinated, or not.

That tells me they’ve been shamed before.

My job isn’t to judge your choices. It’s to explain options, share evidence, and support your decisions, without bias or pressure.

No shame. Just care that meets you where you are.

Patients are sometimes shocked when I suggest they consider a certain medication. How could a naturopath recommend medication? 😱

Some people feel like needing meds is failing… or that not needing them makes you “better.” Spoiler: neither is true.

While I am of course going to be supporting patients with my key tools of diet/lifestyle counselling and targeted supplements…

…and if their ultimate goal is to avoid medications, I am totally on board most of the time…

…but sometimes medication IS the best choice, and is necessary to get their health back to a place where they can make the lifestyle changes they need to.

I’m a naturopath, but I don’t believe more supplements = better care.

If we use them, it’s because they support a clear goal — not because they’re trendy.

Informed options. Realistic plans. No pressure.

Labs can help, but they shouldn’t overwhelm you.

I start with what you already have, and only suggest additional tests if there’s a clear reason. There are lots of trendy or interesting functional tests out there, but many don’t have strong research backing and can be expensive- so if we order them, it’s always for a purposeful, evidence-based reason.

Testing is optional, and we can still make a plan that fits your life it’s not an option right now.
