Here is one safety shortcut that should be eliminated:

❌ Insufficient Emergency Equipment

Most facilities will need to meet a set minimum for things like the number of fire extinguishers or emergency eye wash stations in the facility. While these minimums are a good start, many facilities should really have more of them available.

As someone responsible for the safety of the facility, you should identify areas where there are specific risks, and make sure the proper emergency equipment is located nearby. Complying with just the minimums is a popular workplace safety shortcut, which can lead to major problems.

Do you know how to plan a proper safety drill?

All your workplace safety drills need to be well planned out to ensure they are not only executed properly, but also to ensure you can gather all the data you can about the drill. This data can be used to make further safety improvements and locate where potential problems could occur.

Some specific points of data that you’ll want to work on collecting include:

➡️ Time to Evacuate – Whether evacuating to a location outside, or to a specific part of the facility, you’ll want to know how long it takes to get everyone to safety.

➡️ Participation – In most facilities there will be at least a few people who either try to stay in their work area or their office until the drill is over. Taking a headcount to ensure everyone participates is a good idea.

➡️ Personal Protection Equipment – When holding a drill that requires certain people or areas to put on personal protection equipment, you should measure how long it takes for them to get it on, and whether they do it properly.

➡️ Shutting Down Machinery – It is often essential to shut down specific machines during safety drills (or actual emergencies) to ensure they are not operating when emergency personnel are in the facility. Keeping track of which machines were properly shut down is very important.

➡️ You will also want to make sure you are planning all types of drills on a schedule so that people on all shifts experience them. This is why most facilities will plan their safety drills months or even a year in advance to ensure everyone knows how to respond to a real emergency.

Manufacturing facilities are an essential part of the global economy, but they are also one of the more dangerous places of employment. While there have been significant manufacturing safety improvements over the past several decades, many facilities still have a long way to go.

Here is one manufacturing safety tip that shouldn’t be ignored:

➡️ Incentivize Safe Employees

In most facilities the number one cause of accidents and injuries is employees who fail to act safely at all times. It is usually not an intentional thing and is mainly due to employees taking shortcuts or getting lazy with their safety efforts.

While many facilities take disciplinary action against workers who don’t follow the safety rules, that is often not enough. It is far more effective to offer them some type of incentive for keeping the facility safe and following all the safety standards in the facility. The incentives can be monetary, paid time off, or public recognition. Experiment with your facility to see what works. 👍 👷🏼‍♂️

Here’s an important safety tip!

➡️ Regularly Revisit Safety Standards

Go back and review all the safety steps that have been implemented. Make sure that the safety standards for each given hazard are still the best solution. Inspect safety items (such as the floor marking tape or labels) and make sure they are still in good working order.

Reviewing your safety efforts at least once per year ensures they continue helping to maintain a safe environment long into the future. During the review you can make adjustments, or get ideas for significant safety improvements. Regularly revisiting and updating (if necessary) your safety efforts will keep your facility from falling back into bad habits. 👍

Statistics Canada estimates that 33 percent of workers in the construction industry reported poor mental health. In addition, 64 percent of construction workers wished their employers did more to support mental health initiatives

A good first step and preventative measure is simply talking with team members. Start the conversation early. Establishing an open-door policy with your crew will help make the entire team feel more at ease – knowing they have someone to talk to whom they trust. With that being said, you should also make your workers aware of confidentiality and their rights on and off the job site. By creating a safe atmosphere where workers feel free to open up, your work environment will be safer for everyone involved.

Did you know that poor housekeeping practices frequently contribute to workplace incidents?

Housekeeping is not just about cleanliness. It includes keeping work areas neat and orderly, maintaining halls and floors free of slip and trip hazards, and removing waste materials and other fire hazards from work areas. It also requires paying attention to important details such as the layout of the whole workplace, aisle marking, the adequacy of storage facilities, and maintenance. Good housekeeping is also a basic part of incident and fire prevention.

Effective housekeeping is an ongoing operation: it is not a hit-and-miss cleanup done occasionally. Periodic "panic" cleanups are costly and ineffective in reducing incidents.

Well, hello, Monday!

Let’s start the week off with an important safety tip! 👍👷🏼‍♂️

➡️ Never skip breaks

We all experience times when we have so much work to get done that we are tempted to skip over our lunch or breaks. While this is typically done with the best of intentions, it can lead to some serious safety problems.

Taking breaks at work doesn't just give us an opportunity to relax, it is actually an important part of workplace safety. By letting your mind and body recover for even just a few minutes, you will be able to work more safely. Occasional breaks along with a lunch break will help restore your energy levels, reduce stress, and help avoid physical injury and muscle strain.
