Did you know, essential oils can help you fight off respiratory infection??
Many essential oils contain chemical compounds like, organic alcohols, phenols and oxides that help fight off viral, bacterial and fungal infections.
These oils include but are not limited to: Oregano, lavender, peppermint, tee tree, basil, sage, thyme, and eucalyptus, which may be the most beneficial in the case of respiratory infection.
So how exactly can these oils help fight a respiratory infection??
By inhalation... when the aromatic compounds in these oils are inhaled, they come in to direct contact with the surface of the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract and can kill the viral, bacterial or fungal microbes.
Here is how to do it.
Put a drop or two of a carrier oil, like olive oil, in the palm of your hand and then add 2 or 3 drops of your chosen oil (I personally would recommend using Oregano or Eucalyptus, but any of the oils mentioned above will work), rub the palms of your hands together and cup them over your mouth and nose (close your eyes to avoid irritation). Take several deep breaths through both your nose and your mouth to treat every bit of your sinus, throat and bronchial tissues. Then thoroughly wash your hands
If you are stimulated to cough, do not suppress it, let it out, it is helping to clear out both mucous and the infection.
Repeat this process a few times a day at the onset of symptoms (during the first couple days of illness) and see how quickly you recover!
You could also use the same dilution method and rub the oils on your chest and bottoms of your feet to add another layer of treatment, this will allow the oils to be absorbed into your body, they will have a slower impact on the infection, but and impact none the less.
