What’s one “should” you can let go of today?

We all carry them:

“I should exercise more.”

“I should be a better parent.”

“You should know how I feel.”

The word “should” sounds harmless, but it often brings guilt, shame, and defensiveness—making it harder to grow or connect.

Here’s a simple therapist tip:
When you catch yourself saying “should,” try swapping it for:

“I want…” (desire)

“I choose…” (ownership)

“It matters to me to…” (values)

It’s amazing how a small shift in language can change the way we feel—and how others hear us.

Your turn:
What’s a “should” statement you want to replace with a more helpful one?

(Inspired by the work of Dr. David Burns on “should statements” and Dr. Kristin Neff on self-compassion.)

Want to explore how your language impacts your self-talk and relationships?

Why Expressing Gratitude Matters and How to Ask for It Too

As a therapist, I often see how gratitude shapes the quality of our relationships — with partners, family, friends, and even ourselves. Research consistently shows that expressing gratitude can boost happiness, reduce stress, and deepen emotional connections. When we openly say “thank you” or acknowledge what others do for us, it creates a positive cycle of kindness and trust.

But what about when you need to feel appreciated? Sometimes, it’s hard to speak up when you want to know someone values your efforts. It’s important to communicate this need clearly and compassionately. Instead of assuming others should “just know,” try saying things like:

“It means a lot to me when you acknowledge what I do.”
“I feel more connected when I hear appreciation from you.”

This kind of honest sharing encourages healthy communication and helps prevent resentment from building up. Remember, gratitude is a two-way street — giving it and receiving it enriches us both.

Try this: Tonight, share one thing you’re grateful for with someone close to you and gently share how their appreciation makes a difference to you.

Rest is productive. Breathe, slow down, and come back to yourself.

Taking care of yourself means honouring your limits, tuning into your needs, and giving yourself permission to pause.

You don’t have to do it all today—healing happens in the moments you choose yourself.

Be gentle with you.

The Choice Point — Hide or Heal

When we feel shame or regret, we often hide:

Blame others.
Make excuses.
Numb with distractions.
Label ourselves as “broken” to avoid trying.

But there’s a choice point:
👉 Will I keep hiding? Or will I face my actions and take steps to repair?

Facing it fuels healing.
Hiding fuels more shame.

Reflection question:
Where in your life are you hiding instead of healing?

You don’t have to stay stuck in hiding — healing is possible, and support can help you take that first step.
Book a session today and let’s work together on facing shame with compassion and courage:
