Our Health Care System Gets A Boost

It’s graduation time and how inspiring it is to attend school graduation ceremonies and witness eager, young faces completing high school and preparing for their future.
Such was the case in Oliver and Osoyoos. The South Okanagan Health Care Auxiliary (Oliver Thrift Store) attended High School Graduation Ceremonies, June 24th and 25th, awarding bursaries to further student health education studies.

A. South Okanagan Secondary in Oliver
-2 bursaries of $2500 each were presented to Amelia Craig-From and Kimveer Karwasra, by June Johnston, Oliver Thrift Store Volunteer. These 2 young women will be enrolled in Engineering and Sciences for Medical Research.

B. Osoyoos Secondary in Osoyoos
-1 bursary of $2500 was presented to Gyll Burton, by Denise Griffin, Oliver Thrift Store Volunteer. Gyll will be studying Dental Hygiene.

We were honored to award these students with bursaries totalling $7500, monies raised in the South Okanagan at the Oliver Thrift Store. We wish these students much happiness and success in their personal and professional lives.

For many years we have had a dream to expand the floor space and open a store that met the needs of a growing South Okanagan community and the needs of our 72 volunteers. In 2020 we began preparing with the assistance of one of our volunteers, a retired architect and builder who stepped up with a plan and was able to bring together a volunteer work crew to get started.
Now that vision is becoming a reality.
Five years later, the expanded store will open this fall. We know you will be as excited as we are.
We are very proud to let the community know that the new store expansion and some upgrades to the old store was 100% funded by store profits and donations.
Has it been easy? No, rising costs for construction materials, a shortage of trades, and shrinking grant opportunities, has delayed progress. And don’t forget COVID! But now our vision is becoming a reality.
In the meantime, the former store remains
OPEN for sales and donations, as construction work continues, Tuesday-Friday noon-4 pm
and Saturdays 10-2 pm
