I was quite surprised after purchasing a First Aid book from the 1900s has the same methods used today, over 100 years later - on how to fold and use slings.

These methods are still used for wrapping arms and folding triangle bandages.

If you'd like to learn more, we have first aid classes running frequently. Next scheduled class is March 16 2020.

Falls from elevation are one of the leading causes of injuries to works in British Columbia. Stairways must come complete with handrails when it rises more than four steps and if a worker is able to fall when working more than 10ft, a guard rail or other protective systems must be in place.

Before using any tool for work, be sure you inspect it first for signs of fatigue, wear and tear that may compromise the safety of it.

When we need to work on an area higher than normal reach, the most common and cost effective item that can be used is scaffolding. The versatility of scaffolding systems can present the user with many options in it design and construction but as different as the structures may be, some basic safety information regarding this “tool of the trades” remains the same and should be considered. Whether you are asked to assemble or work on scaffolding, a complete inspection of the components and work area can greatly reduce the chances of an incident happening. As with any inspection, we should be looking for current hazards and potential hazards that may arise as the job proceeds. As all situations are different, there is not one answer.

With any upright system that is being installed, it's important to look for overhead powerlines, overhead doors and other work being done overhead. Plan ahead. Be safe.

Wash your Hands! YOU can prevent the spread of illness.

Hand washing is the single most effective way to prevent the spread of germs. Wash with warm, running water and soap, scrubbing between your fingers and under your nails for the length of time it takes to sing the “Happy Birthday” song.

Always Wash After:

· Preparing food

· Using the bathroom

· Coughing, sneezing or blowing your nose

· Handling trash

· Treating a cut or wound

There are a number of common reasons why people don’t report near misses. One is that we don't want to get into trouble with a supervisor or fellow worker. Another reason might be embarrassment. Nobody likes to admit to being part of an accident or close call, or we might find it is too much trouble to report it - forms to fill out, questions to answer. Of course, none of these reasons amount to much when you consider that reporting a close call might save a co-worker from serious injury or death.

By reporting these close calls, can help prevent a more serious accident from taking place. Close calls are typically warning signs and when left untreated, bad stuff can happen.

A stroke (brain attack) is the informal term for a cerebro-vascular accident (CVA).Stroke awareness is becoming more apparent due to the fact that strokes can occur in young and apparently healthy adults. CVA causes brain damage by the sudden blockage or rupture of a cerebral artery. Stroke victims with a decreased level of consciousness will often have airway and respiratory problems. Strokes result in permanent damage to brain tissue and the victim is left with some degree of permanent disability.

Just remember these tips when you suspect that someone is having a stroke:

F - Face look uneven

A - One arm hanging down

S - Slurred Speech?

T - Time to call 911

Whether you are in the presence of a user or you use a cell phone personally, using the phone is a significant distraction. Being distracted while driving, while operating tools and equipment, when walking, when in public or at work it increases the risk of injuries and accidents.

Some common injuries transpiring from distracted walking are: tripping up or down stairs, bumping into other people, walking into a doorway or wall, stepping into traffic, not hearing someone call your name (in the event of a hazard), and general situational unawareness.

An injury—free office helps your workplace run smoothly. Some hazards are typical of offices everywhere. Here are some common concerns for office workers:

§ Poor Lighting

§ Poor ventilation and indoor air quality

§ Ergonomics

§ Slips, trips and falls

§ Electrical hazards

§ Collisions with objects such as open file cabinet drawers

Surprisingly, the most dangerous part of office work can be the possibility of falls.

Standing on a chair to reach something on a shelf or bending down while seated in an unstable chair are two causes.

A common problem found in offices is a lack of space. But a lack of space should not be used as an excuse to improperly store boxes, copier paper, etc.

What are some common office injuries? Struck By or Striking Objects:

Bumping into doors, open drawers etc.

Bumping into other people while walking

Struck by suddenly opened doors or falling objects

Overexertion and Strains:

 Picking up a load incorrectly

Repetitive Stress injuries resulting from your workstation

What are some ways of controlling hazards in our office areas and encourage office safety?

Keep all storage of combustible materials (cardboard, paper) to an absolute minimum as they can pose both a fire and trip hazard.

Never store combustibles near electrical outlets.

Place heavier objects on lower shelves.

Ensure all shelves are sturdy and will be able to handle the load

Never block hallways, doors, and stairwells with stored office materials

There should always be clear access to electrical panels, fire extinguishers, AEDs, and fire pull stations.
