Taking precautions to avoid falls is crucial, to ensure that seniors can safely age in place and retain more independence. One-third of older people fall at least once a year, which is the leading cause of injury and injury-related hospitalizations for Canadians over 65 years of age.

Many of the falls that happen in and around our homes are preventable. Here are a few helpful tips from the Preventing Falls at Home educational resource produced by the Sinai Health: Healthy Ageing and Geriatrics:

• Participate in regular exercise and physical activity (talk to your doctor for guidance)

• Review medications to ensure they are not causing dizziness that can cause you to fall

• Have regular checkups by an eye doctor – poor vision can increase chances of falling

• Make your home safer by removing tripping hazards and keeping important items at a close reach

It is important to review potential risk factors for falls with your doctor, and take measures to minimize risk. At Stay Home Forever, we have a variety of services to help seniors live with improved = safety and independence, wherever their home may be.

January is Alzheimer’s Awareness month in Canada. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia and contributes to the majority of dementia cases. There are currently more than 450,000 Canadians living with diagnosed dementia. This affects individuals, along with their families and caregivers in profound ways.
Awareness of what people living with dementia experience helps fight stigma, and is a step towards a more compassionate, caring society.

Caring for seniors living with dementia requires patience, understanding, and a tailored approach. Here are some useful tips for supporting individuals with dementia:

• Establish a Routine: Maintain a consistent daily schedule to provide a sense of structure and predictability. Keep to a consistent sleep schedule and create a calming bedtime routine.

• Create a Safe Environment: Remove potential hazards to prevent accidents. Ensure good lighting to reduce confusion and anxiety.

• Simplify Communication: Use clear, simple language and speak slowly. Ask one question at a time and allow time for a response.

• Provide Visual Aids: Use visual cues like pictures or labels to assist with memory and understanding. Use memory aids like calendars, reminders, and labeled items.

• Encourage Independence: Break tasks into smaller, manageable steps. Allow the person to do as much as they can independently. Understand that tasks may take longer – avoid rushing or putting pressure on the person.

• Include Meaningful Activities: Engage in activities that the individual enjoys or used to enjoy.
Modify activities to suit their current abilities. Maintain social connections with family and friends. Gentle physical activities can promote overall well-being (consult with a healthcare professional for suitable exercises).

• Provide Emotional Support: Be patient, understanding, and validate the person's feelings.
Foster a positive, supportive environment. Understand that challenging behaviors may be a form of communication. Identify triggers and respond with empathy.

• Provide Proper Nutrition and Hydration: Ensure a balanced diet and monitor fluid intake. Consider consulting a healthcare professional for dietary guidance.

Remember that dementia care is individualized, and strategies may need to be adjusted based on the person's unique needs and progression of the disease. Additionally, involving healthcare professionals and seeking support from dementia-specific resources can be invaluable for both caregivers and individuals with dementia.

Now that the cold weather has arrived, here are some helpful tips for seniors to keep in mind:

• Indoors: keeping warm
Maintain a comfortable indoor temperature, use extra blankets or layers if needed, and wear warm clothing. Ensure your home is properly winterized and insulated. Have heating systems serviced before winter to ensure they are working efficiently.

• Outdoors: cold-weather clothing
Make sure your winter wardrobe includes warm, waterproof, and wind-resistant clothing.
Dress in layers to stay warm. Pay attention to extremities, such as hands, feet, and head, by wearing gloves, warm socks, and a hat. Choose clothing that is easy to put on and take off, considering any mobility challenges.

• Prevent falls
Be cautious of slippery surfaces, especially if there is ice or snow. Wear slip-resistant shoes and consider using a cane or walker for stability, if necessary. Ensure that walkways are kept clear of snow and ice.

• Keep active
Engage in regular physical activity, even if it's indoors. Explore exercises like chair yoga, mall walking or group exercise geared towards your fitness level. Consult with a healthcare provider before starting a new exercise routine.

• Drink your water
Dehydration can still occur, even in colder months, especially if indoor heating systems dry out the air. Make sure to stay hydrated.

• Stay social
Uplift and energize your life with activities throughout wintertime. Attend social events, join clubs, or connect with friends and family. Consider virtual options if weather conditions make it challenging to go out.

• Maintain health check-ups
Stay in touch with your healthcare providers. Schedule regular health check-ups to monitor and manage any chronic conditions. Discuss any concerns related to cold weather with your healthcare provider.

By keeping in mind these tips, seniors can better navigate the challenges that colder weather may bring and ensure a safe and comfortable winter season. Wishing you well this winter! ❄
