The 𝐅𝐈𝐑𝐒𝐓 𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐍𝐆 to do if you have painful periods…⁣

If you struggle with painful periods, spotting, mood swings, low energy levels this is for you!⁣

The first thing you need to do is start to track your cycle. ⁣

You can do this on your phone in your notes app, your phone calendar or by printing off a blank calendar. ⁣

Day 1 is the first day you bleed. ⁣

Start writing down any feeling that come up each day, your energy level, how heavy/light your flow is, cramps and where in your body they are located (lower back, pelvic area, on one specific side), cravings that you have.⁣

Do this every day until your next period starts, then grab a new calendar/notepad and start over from day 1.⁣

Do this for at least 3 months.⁣

You’ll start to see the patterns.⁣

✨When your energy is the highest and you’re the most motivated (usually around ovulation).⁣

✨When you don’t want to leave the house or socialize with anyone (usually menstruation).⁣

✨When you feel the most creative⁣

✨When you want to socialize with everyone⁣

You’ll begin to get a sense of why you feel how you feel so you can start planning your life around each phase.⁣

When you start to know yourself better you begin to harness the power that comes from being a cyclical being so you can live your fullest and best life yet.

Cycle Tracking my way to better health
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When I learned all the pain I had been dealing with during my period could be corrected I was so excited.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I would’ve literally tried anything at this point.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I found a cycle tracker online and started to write down how I was feeling each day. From the first day of my bleed to the day before my next bleed.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I started to see the patterns.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
During my bleed, my menstrual phase, I wanted to get cozy on the couch, read or watch a show, block out the world and have time away from everyone even family members.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The following week, my follicular phase, I felt like I was emerging from a cocoon. I felt refreshed and started to get more focus on things I wanted to get done for the next month.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Then I reached my ovulatory phase. I was full of energy, wanted to meet up with everyone I knew for coffee dates, dinner, whatever. I was focused and checking so many things off my to-do list.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As I stepped into the luteal phase I was still feeling the energy, the creative juices were flowing but also noticed I was starting to slow down, started getting really zoned in on what I wanted for myself, feeling my emotions deeply and hearing my body tell me what it needed.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Understanding what to expect each of these phases and listening to what my body needs throughout the month has helped me live more in sync with myself and by doing things like eating, exercising and doing self-care that supports the phase I’m able to have more energy, get more done and feel calmer and happier.

I never had a good relationship with my menstruation. No one ever explained to me what was going to happen. One day when I was 12 we went on a family weekend trip to a summer camp where I remember going into the bathroom to p*e and when I went to wipe there was a bit of blood. I thought omg what is happening, what do I do. I’m in a new place, no idea what this was and I remember having all these thoughts cross my mind, first panic that I’m probably dying and then curiosity about what this means. I folded up some toilet paper to put in my underwear and I went to find my mom. There was no big moment of being excited for me or a talk about what’s to come just a scramble to get some pads. My dad had to be told because he had to go to the store 😬⁣. I remember having this feeling of connectedness, to something bigger than myself. I instinctually drew inward and started spending time alone with myself or outside in the forest each time it would come. I felt like I could communicate with the trees and animals but also started to be more aware of myself and my body. Our home was very conservative and it was taboo to discuss anything related to one’s body or sexuality. Over time I began to replace this connected feeling with shame. Shame around the changes I was going through, shame around not knowing more about what happened to my body each month but being too embarrassed to ask anyone. ⁣It took a long, long time to get to a place where I can talk openly about menstruation, and I still read or hear things and think eww that’s gross and i have to stop and question that feeling. Our western culture has deemed it “gross”, “embarrassing”, “shameful” to menstruate. It’s tried to devalue the power we have through our cycle and our connectedness. It’s time to take back that power. I am doing so by sharing my story and the information I’ve learned along the way and being here to support each and every one one of you as you step into your power. ❤️
