Hey everyone, I'm giving a talk at the library this Wednesday. Did you know Orillia sent its militia unit to fight in the Riel Rebellion in 1885? Did you even know we had a militia unit? They got together one night a week to do drill and take target practice, then, with only 18 hours notice, found themselves on a train heading to the northwest where government men had already been killed. Come on out to the library at 6pm, Wed May 8th to hear the story.

Dr. Towns new book The Spanish Flu: Orillia's Ordeal in 1918, is a fantastic read for the times. It gives a look back on a pandemic when medicine was much less advanced then it is today.

The 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic devastated communities, and Orillia was no exception. But in a tangible example of the famous "Orillia Spirit", The townspeople rallied like few others to fight the scourge. As a result the town fared better than almost every other community in Canada.

How and why this volunteer effort was so successful is a lesson for us all today.

" The Spanish Flu epidemic should be looked on as a high point in Orillia's history."
