🌿 Rosemary and Brain Health: A Natural Ally Backed by Science

centrumpharmacy.com | Your Orleans Wellness Partner

Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis), the fragrant herb native to the Mediterranean, is beloved in kitchens around the world. But beyond its culinary use, rosemary is capturing attention in scientific circles for its remarkable health benefits—particularly in the realms of brain health, inflammation, and immune support.

At Centrum Pharmacy, where we believe in the power of both modern medicine and evidence-informed natural therapies, we want to highlight why this traditional herb might be more relevant to your health than ever.

🧠 Rosemary and Cognitive Health: More Than Just Folk Wisdom

Rosemary has been associated with memory and mental clarity for centuries. In ancient Greece and Rome, scholars would use it to sharpen focus. Now, modern studies are catching up to this wisdom:

➡️Aromatherapy and Memory: Research has shown that inhaling rosemary's essential oils may improve memory performance, attention, and cognitive speed.
➡️Neuroprotective Effects: A compound in rosemary called 1,8-cineole inhibits the breakdown of acetylcholine—a neurotransmitter critical for memory and learning. This may help slow age-related cognitive decline.

💡 The Alzheimer’s Connection
Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of dementia worldwide, continues to challenge researchers and families alike. But rosemary could offer some hope.
➡️Rosemary is rich in carnosic acid, a powerful antioxidant that protects brain cells from oxidative stress and inflammation—two major contributors to neurodegeneration.
➡️In 2025, scientists developed a stable form of this compound called diAcCA, which has shown impressive results in animal studies:
Improved memory performance
Reduced toxic proteins (like beta-amyloid and tau)
Increased synaptic connections in the brain

Even more promising? diAcCA becomes active only in inflamed brain regions, which could mean fewer side effects.

🌿 Beyond the Brain: Rosemary’s Whole-Body Benefits
Rosemary's phytochemicals support overall wellness:
➡️Digestive health: Traditionally used to reduce bloating and stimulate digestion.
➡️Anti-inflammatory action: Compounds like rosmarinic acid and ursolic acid help calm chronic inflammation.
➡️Skin health: Antioxidants may protect against UV damage and help manage conditions like eczema or acne.
➡️Antimicrobial properties: Rosemary oil may help preserve food and reduce bacterial or fungal contamination—researchers are exploring pharmaceutical applications too.

⚠️ Safety and Precautions
For most people, rosemary in food, tea, or essential oil is perfectly safe. But high doses—especially in supplement or extract form—can cause side effects such as:
➡️Upset stomach or vomiting
➡️Seizures (particularly in individuals with epilepsy)
➡️Possible uterine contractions in pregnancy
Important: Rosemary may interact with certain medications (e.g., blood thinners). Always consult your pharmacist or healthcare provider before using herbal products therapeutically.

🫖 Your Takeaway from Centrum Pharmacy
Whether you’re sipping rosemary tea, cooking with fresh sprigs, or diffusing its oil for relaxation, this humble herb offers more than meets the eye.

And at Centrum Pharmacy, we’re here to support your brain health, memory, and wellness journey with personalized care and counselling. Speak to our pharmacists to learn more about safe herbal supplements, memory support, and natural remedies that complement your health goals.

🔔 NOTICE REGARDING FAMILY PHYSICIAN WAITLIST

If you are looking for a family doctor, please read this entire notice carefully.

📋 Waitlist Temporarily Closed
Due to overwhelming demand, we regret to inform you that the current waitlist for rostering new patients to a family physician is now closed, having reached full capacity.

We understand how important it is to have consistent access to primary care. Please be assured that this closure is temporary, and the waitlist will reopen periodically.

We strongly encourage you to check our website regularly for updates, as:
➡️Existing physicians may reopen their rosters, and
➡️New family doctors are actively being recruited to serve the Orleans area through our ongoing efforts.
When new opportunities arise, the waitlist will reopen to the public.

✅ For Those Already Registered (as of 12:00 a.m. on June 21, 2025)
If you submitted your name before the deadline, rest assured:
➡️Your name has been securely received and has been forwarded to the clinic.
➡️Each physician independently determines how many new patients they can accept.
➡️Patients will be randomly selected from the waitlist.
➡️If selected, you will be contacted directly by the physician’s office within the next month.

⚠️ Important: Centrum Pharmacy does not make rostering decisions. Our role is to collect and forward names, ensuring that every eligible patient is presented fairly to the recruiting physicians.

📞 If You Are Not Contacted Within a Month
If you do not receive a call from a physician's office within four weeks, it unfortunately means you were not rostered in this round.
In compliance with privacy regulations, we will securely remove your application from our records.
➡️You will need to reapply when the waitlist reopens in the future.
➡️Please monitor our website for updates on future openings.

❤️ Our Commitment to Centrum Pharmacy Patients
If you are currently a Centrum Pharmacy patient, we want to reassure you of our continued advocacy:
➡️Physicians often open limited spots throughout the year as their capacity allows.
➡️Each time we are informed that a doctor is accepting new patients, we automatically submit the names of our regular pharmacy patients for consideration.
➡️As a result, virtually every regular Centrum Pharmacy patient eventually obtains a family doctor through our coordinated efforts.

If you are not yet a Centrum Pharmacy patient, we strongly encourage you to:
Fill your prescriptions with us, and become part of our patient community.
Doing so allows us to include your name in future physician openings — many of which arise without public notice or large-scale announcements.

This is one of the many ways Centrum Pharmacy goes beyond dispensing medication — we are your healthcare advocate. We are committed to ensuring that our patients have consistent and continued access to primary care. We work to ensure that every one of our regular patients has a family physician

💊 Supporting Your Healthcare While You Wait
Centrum Pharmacy remains fully committed to your health while you await a family doctor. We offer:
➡️Friday and Saturday Walk-In Clinics for prompt medical attention
➡️Minor Ailments Prescribing Services — for common conditions like infections, rashes, or allergies, without needing to see a doctor
➡️Prescription consultations, renewals, and medication reviews by our experienced healthcare team
➡️Unlike other pharmacies, we provide Prescription Extensions at no additional cost
Whether you're managing a long-term condition or need one-time care, our services are designed to ensure you never fall through the cracks.

🙏 Thank You for Trusting Centrum Pharmacy
To the thousands of residents who have trusted us through this process — thank you.

In 2025 alone, over 5,500 patients have been matched with a family doctor directly through Centrum Pharmacy’s efforts.

If you’ve already transferred your prescriptions to us — thank you for placing your healthcare in our hands. We are honoured to care for you and your family.

👩‍⚕️ Our Physician Recruitment Impact

Centrum Pharmacy has taken a leadership role in addressing the physician shortage in Orleans. This summer, we reached a major milestone:

Twelve new family physicians have been successfully recruited to practice in the Orleans area through our coordinated initiatives.

As a result, thousands of previously unattached residents now have access to dedicated primary care — and we will continue to grow that number.

💬 Final Words
Thank you for your patience, trust, and continued support.
We remain committed to helping every family in Orleans access the care they deserve.

Come for the Convenience. Stay for the Service.
Caring for Your Family Since 1999.

🛑 DISCLAIMER
Being on the waitlist or a patient of Centrum Pharmacy does not guarantee that you will be rostered to a family physician. Physicians make independent decisions regarding whom they will roster. Centrum Pharmacy’s role is to collect and forward names when physician openings are announced. If selected, you will be contacted directly by the physician’s office. Please do not contact the pharmacy for status updates. The waitlist will reopen when physician rosters expand or new doctors are recruited. Concerned about weight gain from antidepressants? You're not alone—and we can help.

At Centrum Pharmacy, we understand that while antidepressants play a critical role in mental health treatment, weight gain is a frustrating and common side effect. This can discourage patients from staying on their medication—even when it’s working.

📊 Recent research shows:
Bupropion is linked to weight loss and better adherence.
Escitalopram, paroxetine, duloxetine, and others are associated with more weight gain.

💊 Our pharmacists can:
✅ Recommend alternative medications when appropriate
✅ Help you monitor progress
✅ Provide lifestyle and nutritional strategies to reduce side effects
✅ Support your mental and metabolic health

Tips to manage antidepressant-related weight gain:
🥗 Eat whole, balanced meals
🏃 Stay active with 150 minutes/week of movement
⏱️ Try time-restricted eating (e.g. 10–12 hour eating window)
😴 Improve your sleep to curb cravings
📓 Track your habits and progress

Trump’s 200% Drug Tariffs: A Prescription for Trouble

When former U.S. President Donald Trump recently floated the idea of imposing 200% tariffs on imported pharmaceuticals, headlines were quick to react—but for Canadian pharmacists, this is no time for passive concern. It's time to prepare.

Though these tariffs are aimed primarily at India and China, where most generics and raw pharmaceutical ingredients originate, the ripple effects could hit Canada hard. In fact, Canada’s own exports—about $3 billion worth of generics annually to the U.S.—could become collateral damage, threatening our domestic drug supply, our pharmacy operations, and our patients’ access to affordable care.

⚠️ What’s at Risk for Canadian Pharmacies?

1. Generic Drug Access Could Collapse
Generic medications run on thin margins. If Canadian manufacturers lose access to the U.S. market, it may no longer be viable to produce certain drugs, even for Canadians. For example, if a facility in British Columbia stops making metformin because it can’t export 60% of its output, pharmacists across Ontario and beyond could be left scrambling to source a staple treatment.

2. Your Drug Prices Could Spike
If U.S. wholesalers start buying up Canadian supply to bypass tariffs, domestic drug prices may rise overnight. Community pharmacies like Centrum operate on narrow margins. Even a 10% wholesale increase on generics could force difficult choices: absorb the loss, or pass costs on to patients. Either way, it’s the community that suffers.

3. Independent Pharmacies Face a Retail Squeeze
Independent, community-based pharmacies like ours risk being having to dispense drugs below cost without ant margin to pay for employees or business expense, let alone make any profit in a market where price instability becomes the new norm. That’s bad news for patients who depend on consistent, compassionate care—not just quick transactions.

💡 But There’s Hope—If We Act
While this looming crisis is serious, Canada’s pharmaceutical sector has two key advantages:

✅ Global Trust: Canadian-made generics are seen as safe and high-quality.
✅ Agility: Our manufacturers can pivot quickly and strategically.

Some companies are already rebranding their products to highlight Canadian regulatory standards and quality assurance, a move that could attract U.S. buyers desperate for alternatives to Chinese or Indian supply chains.

This also comes as Canada approaches a July 21 trade deadline with the U.S., and policymakers are pushing hard for pharmaceutical exemptions. But even with political efforts, frontline healthcare workers must stay alert.

💊 What Centrum Pharmacy Is Doing
At Centrum Pharmacy, we’re already:

✅Monitoring critical inventory to avoid disruptions.
✅Communicating with suppliers to understand pricing and availability shifts.
✅Keeping patients informed and offering options when substitutions are needed.

We believe in Complete, Comprehensive, Caring, and Connected Care, and that includes advocating for pharmacist-led drug access planning—even in the face of international policy chaos.

This moment may test our healthcare system—but it may also position Canada as a world leader in ethical, high-quality drug production.
Let’s be ready.

Beyond Sodium: Lifestyle Strategies to Lower Blood Pressure

A Centrum Pharmacy Guide to Nonpharmacologic Hypertension Management
At Centrum Pharmacy, we’re often asked:

“Are there natural ways to lower my blood pressure that actually work?”

The answer is yes — but it requires more than cutting back on salt. As pharmacists, we’re uniquely positioned to guide you through safe, evidence-based strategies that go beyond medication, blending clinical insight with everyday, practical advice.

High Blood Pressure: Why Early Action Matters
Hypertension (high blood pressure) affects nearly 4 in 10 adults over 25 — and many don’t even know they have it. Left uncontrolled, it silently increases your risk of heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, and dementia.

Starting medication early has been shown to dramatically improve long-term outcomes. In fact, people who begin treatment within a month of diagnosis are 21% more likely to get their blood pressure under control. But medication is only part of the equation.

Whether you’re starting treatment or hoping to avoid it, lifestyle changes remain essential for long-term blood pressure control — and you don’t have to do it alone.

Potassium: The Nutrient That Balances Blood Pressure
We often talk about sodium, but not enough about potassium. This essential mineral helps lower blood pressure and protects your heart, especially when you’re consuming a lot of salt.

Sources of potassium:
Fruits: Bananas, kiwis, apricots, guava
Vegetables: Spinach, avocados, sweet potatoes, broccoli
Other sources: Legumes, dairy, salmon, halibut

⚠️ Important: If you have kidney disease, or take medications like ACE inhibitors, ARBs, or potassium-sparing diuretics, speak with your doctor or pharmacist before increasing potassium — too much can be dangerous.

✅ Centrum Tip: Aim to add one extra potassium-rich food per day (unless contraindicated), and replace processed snacks with whole foods when possible.

🧂 Sodium Still Matters — But Context Is Key
Even if you don’t use the salt shaker, you may still be getting too much sodium. Packaged meals, deli meats, and even “healthy” plant-based items can be loaded with hidden salt.

🧠 Did you know?
Vegetarian and vegan diets can still be high in sodium if they rely on processed meat alternatives or boxed meals.

📦 Look for:
Products with less than 5% daily sodium value per serving
Labels that say “low sodium” or “no added salt”
DASH-style eating: more fruits, veggies, low-fat dairy, legumes, and whole grains

🌿 Centrum Tip: Cook at home when possible. Focus on simple ingredients and fresh herbs to flavor your food instead of salt.

🍷🚬 Alcohol & To***co: Overlooked Contributors
🔹 Alcohol: Cutting back to less than 2 drinks per day can lower blood pressure by nearly 4 mmHg systolic.
🔹 Smoking: Increases blood pressure and damages your arteries. Quitting drastically reduces your risk of stroke and heart disease.

At Centrum Pharmacy, we offer smoking cessation support, including:

Ni****ne replacement therapy
Personalized strategies
Referrals to quit programs and local services

Weight Loss: A Major Lever for Heart Health

If you're overweight, losing even a few kilograms can make a big difference:
📉 About 1 mmHg blood pressure reduction per 1 kg (2.2 lbs) lost.

We can help:
Recommend healthy eating strategies
Guide physical activity goals
Support eligible patients exploring weight-loss medications like GLP-1 receptor agonists (e.g., semaglutide)

💊 Supplements: What the Evidence Shows
While supplements shouldn’t replace prescribed therapy, some may support blood pressure control when used appropriately:

🟢 Potassium
🠋 Lowers BP by 2–3 mmHg
⚠️ Should only be used under medical supervision — especially if you have kidney issues or take ACE inhibitors, ARBs, or potassium-sparing diuretics.

🟢 Omega-3 (EPA/DHA)
🠋 Lowers BP by 2–4 mmHg
✅ Also helps reduce triglycerides. A good addition for heart health.

🟢 Magnesium
🠋 Lowers BP by 2–3 mmHg
⚠️ Can cause diarrhea and interact with some medications. Use with caution.

🟢 Aged Garlic Extract
🠋 Lowers BP by 5–8 mmHg (based on limited studies)
⚠️ Avoid if allergic to garlic. Not recommended as a first-line therapy.

⚠️ Always check with our pharmacists before starting any supplement — especially if you’re on multiple medications or have kidney/liver concerns. Not sure what’s safe for you?

Ask us about MedsCheck – a free pharmacist consultation for eligible Ontario residents.
We’ll review your prescriptions, supplements, and health conditions to help you stay safe and on track.

The Unseen Risks of Cannabis Use Without Healthcare Guidance
A Message from Centrum Pharmacy

Cannabis is often marketed today as natural, harmless, even therapeutic — available legally from corner stores, dispensaries, and websites with minimal regulation or oversight. But at Centrum Pharmacy, we want to make one thing clear: cannabis is a potent drug, and like all drugs, it comes with real risks — especially when used without medical supervision.

Cannabis isn’t just a casual substance — it interacts with your body, your brain, and your long-term health. And while cannabis may hold therapeutic potential for some, its misuse, particularly among young people and vulnerable populations, can have serious consequences.

⚠️ What You Need to Know
The popularity of cannabis has surged, and with it, so has its casual use for everything from stress and anxiety to sleep and pain. But just because it’s legal doesn’t make it safe for everyone.

📌 Cannabis can cause or worsen psychiatric conditions, including depression, anxiety, and in some cases, psychosis — a condition where individuals lose touch with reality.

📌 Young people are especially at risk, particularly those with a family history of mental illness or who use cannabis frequently or in high-potency forms.

📌 Cannabis today is much stronger than in decades past, with high concentrations of THC — the psychoactive compound that can trigger mental health issues.

🧠 The Dopamine Link: What New Research Is Telling Us
Recent studies published in JAMA Psychiatry and other peer-reviewed journals have revealed a deeper understanding of how cannabis may lead to psychosis — a severe mental health condition.

Researchers using a specialized type of brain imaging (neuromelanin-MRI) found that people with Cannabis Use Disorder (CUD) had increased dopamine activity in areas of the brain also linked to schizophrenia. The more severe their cannabis use, the stronger this signal became.

This research shows:
A biological basis for why cannabis can cause psychotic symptoms.
A dose-dependent response: the more someone uses, the higher their risk.
People with CUD often don’t perceive the harm cannabis is doing to them — even when measurable brain changes are occurring.

In people already diagnosed with psychotic illnesses like schizophrenia, cannabis can lead to relapse, worsening symptoms, and treatment failure.

🧑‍⚕️ Why Supervision Matters
We know some patients turn to cannabis for relief when other therapies fall short. That’s why Centrum Pharmacy has partnered with The Clinic Network — a trusted organization that provides free virtual consultations with licensed medical professionals who specialize in medical cannabis therapy.

With a referral from our pharmacy, you can receive:
✅An evidence-based assessment to determine if cannabis is right for you.
✅A personalized, safe dosing plan (if appropriate).
✅Ongoing monitoring and medical oversight.
✅A team that helps manage risks and looks out for long-term well-being.

This service is free of charge and ensures that if you choose to explore cannabis as a treatment option, you're doing so safely and under professional supervision.

💬 From the Experts

“Cannabis is not without risks, especially for young people and those with a family history of psychosis or mental illness.”
— Jessica Ahrens, PhD Candidate, McGill University

“The frequency and potency of use are key risk factors. Many users are unaware of the health harms of cannabis, and more public health education is urgently needed.”
— Dr. Leslie Buckley, Chief of Addictions, CAMH

🌱 The Centrum Approach
At Centrum Pharmacy, we don’t believe in one-size-fits-all medicine. We believe in thoughtful care, honest education, and safe access to therapies — whether conventional or alternative.
