Dr. David Covey is a registered chiropractor in Ontario and a member of the College of Chiropractors of O
ntario. When I started practice 20 years ago, like many chiropractors, my care was all based around helping people feel better and relieving the symptoms. I would adjust until the crisis was over, until they felt better. After a while, one of the things I noticed, was that they always came back again and again with the same problem. The troubling part was too, that when I took x-rays I would always notice more degeneration. I learned early in practice that if I only manage people's episodes of pain, but don't actually correct the problem, that I would be looking after many badly degenerated spines and many sick people. In the beginning of practice too, my understanding of chiropractic was that it was great for helping back pain (and it does). However, as I saw more and more people, I learned that as the spine began to change with care, many problems in their organs began to heal and their overall health began to improve. By my fifth year of practice, I started to break down physically. I was waking up with chronic, severe neck pain, daily headaches, migraine headaches weekly, left arm numbness, back pain and sciatic pain in my right leg. I had damaged my spine in my childhood years, like most kids, through many the many falls and accidents we all go through as children. With time my spine began to show the signs of injury and subluxation (misalignment and a loss of proper movement that causes the spine to degenerate and disrupts nerve function). The breakdown in my spine became more evident throughout my twenties, with episodes of pain, stiffness, and loss of mobility. However, the effect on the spinal cord had the greatest impact on me, affecting organ function. In my early twenties, I was facing high blood pressure and elevated cholesterol levels in addition to episodes of back and neck pain. By age 30, my pain was now chronic and severe in my neck and back, with daily headaches greatly affecting me, and frequent, long infections. I was in so much pain that I was ready to quit practice, despite the long road and great cost to get through my 8 years of training. What changed everything for me was another chiropractor, who talked to me about spinal correction and reconstruction. He told me about all the miracles he was seeing in practice, about how it was possible to restore the proper curve to the neck, and straighten curvatures in the spine. It sounded like a lot of care and time, but I had hope that he could help me. I had to humble myself first and admit that I didn't know everything. He asked me come to a Doctor's report, so he could change my thinking, and break me out of my pain and symptom based model of care in which I had been raised. He began by teaching me that chiropractic is not really about back pain relief, but rather about removing pressure from the spinal cord, about reconnecting my brain to my body, so that my body can heal, function, and repair from above-down, inside-out. I started spinal correction and reconstruction in April that year, at age 30. Within 3 months, it was a dramatic change, and was feeling well for the first time in years. I joined practice with him that fall, training with him and other experts in spinal correction. Within a year the pain levels were all greatly reduced, daily headaches gone, migraines reduced to once a month, arm numbness and sciatic pain gone, and flexibility returning to the spine. By my 5th year of care I did my first half-iron man triathlon, despite never having been an athlete before. My spine is still continuing to improve 15 years later, along with my health. Spinal correction has been a radical change in my health and life. I have my life back! I have seen so many miracles in my patients over the past decade, so many sick people getting healthy and well. However, that never happens unless the mindset begins to change first. One of my greatest challenges is to help people understand their problems are more than just the symptoms they feel. We have been so trained by society to just focus on symptoms, to just do only as much as is necessary to relieve or manage pain or symptoms. My job, as your doctor, is to change your thinking beyond the quick fix, to help you think about rebuilding your health from the inside-out. I would encourage you to invest a little time to come see if we can help you rebuild, from above-down, inside-out!
