🧴🚫 Think twice before putting adult cosmetics on your baby’s skin! 🚫🧴

At Orleans Family Health Clinic, our pediatric team—Ottawa’s largest outpatient pediatric group—wants parents to know:

Your baby’s skin is up to 30% thinner than yours. That means chemicals in nail polish, bronzer, perfumes, and even “natural” creams can soak deeper into their bodies, risking irritation, hormone disruption, and long-term health issues.

❗ Nail polish may contain formaldehyde
❗ “Natural” skincare isn’t always safe
❗ Black henna tattoos can cause lifelong allergies

Babies and toddlers aren’t mini adults. Their skin is still developing. When in doubt, keep it simple.

✅ No perfumes
✅ No adult cosmetics
✅ Avoid harsh "natural" products

If you’re ever unsure, ask your pediatrician first. Your child’s health is worth protecting. 💙

https://orleansmedical.ca/blog/2026/01/05/drunken-monkey-hypothesis/
Why do humans crave alcohol—even though it’s toxic? 🍷🍺

New research shows chimpanzees unintentionally consume the equivalent of 1–2 drinks daily just by eating ripe fruit. That’s because natural fermentation produces alcohol!

This supports the “drunken monkey” hypothesis: humans inherited a taste for alcohol from primate ancestors who relied on alcohol’s smell to find sugar-rich fruit.

🍇 Evolution may explain our cravings, but remember: alcohol today is far stronger and far more harmful than fermented fruit in the wild. Even moderate drinking increases health risks.

At OFHC, we practice Complete, Competent, Comprehensive, and Connected Care—helping patients understand both the science and the choices that impact long-term health.

Statement from regional Medical Officers of Health on sharp rise in serious flu cases in children

In the first two weeks of December, three children between the ages of five and nine have died from influenza A-related complications in the Ottawa and Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU) regions. This is a stark reminder that the flu can lead to severe illness and complications that require hospital care. With much of the respiratory illness season still ahead, we anticipate this will continue to be a challenging flu season.

In addition to getting vaccinated, taking additional preventive steps can help further protect others:
✅ Wash your hands often
✅ Avoid touching your face with unwashed hands
✅ Cover coughs and sneezes with your sleeve or a tissue
✅ Stay home if you are sick
✅ Avoid visiting people in long term care or retirement homes and hospitals of you are ill
✅ If you are sick, or at higher risk of severe illness, consider wearing a mask in crowded or indoor public spaces

https://centrumpharmacy.com/ontarios-flu-vaccination-glitch/

Ontario’s flu vaccine system hit another snag last week.

A glitch in the Ministry of Health’s data system temporarily blocked pharmacies from ordering new flu doses. Although fixed, the error exposed deeper issues pharmacists have been battling all season: rigid ordering rules, delayed shipments, and constant denials for extra doses.

This matters because 57% of Canadians get their seasonal vaccines at pharmacies. When the system fails, fewer people get protected—and hospitalizations rise.

At Centrum Pharmacy, we continue to work around these system issues to make sure our patients receive Complete, Comprehensive, Caring, Connected Care. We’ll keep advocating for a fair, flexible distribution model that puts patients first.

Stay protected. If you still need your flu shot, we’re here to help.

https://orleansmedical.ca/blog/2025/12/08/key-alcohol-guidelines/

🍷 Thinking about your drinking habits?

Nutritionists remind us that:
✅ Women should have no more than 1 drink per day
✅ Men should have no more than 2 drinks per day
✅ Binge drinking starts at 4 drinks for women, 5 for men
✅ Alcohol is linked to cancer, liver disease, and dementia risk

The World Health Organization now says no amount of alcohol is completely safe. But if you do drink, simple steps like drinking water between beverages, never drinking on an empty stomach, and asking why you’re drinking can make a big difference.

Looking for a doctor? ➡️ https://centrumpharmacy.com/get-a-physician/

💡 Book an appointment at Orleans Family Health Clinic if you’d like to talk to a healthcare provider about your alcohol use and overall health.
