🌸 International Women’s Day: Why Women’s Health Needs More Than Awareness 🌸

International Women’s Day is a moment to celebrate women’s achievements — but it’s also an opportunity to reflect on the health gaps many women continue to face.

Conditions like PCOS and endometriosis are often underdiagnosed. Preventive care, including breast cancer screening, is sometimes delayed. And women’s symptoms are still too frequently dismissed or normalized.

At Orleans Family Health Clinic, women’s health is approached as lifelong primary care, not a series of isolated awareness days. From adolescence through menopause and beyond, continuity of care helps ensure concerns are recognized early, followed over time, and addressed with evidence-based medicine.

This International Women’s Day, we’ve brought together key women’s health topics in one place to support awareness, education, and meaningful conversations with your primary care provider.

💙 Women’s health is not a niche — it’s foundational to family and community health.

Health and happiness, hand in hand for families

March is Endometriosis Awareness Month 💛

Did you know that endometriosis affects approximately 1 in 10 women in Canada — yet the average time to diagnosis is still over 5 years? That's five years of chronic pain, difficult periods, fatigue, and fertility struggles being dismissed or misdiagnosed.

Endometriosis is not just "bad periods." It's a complex inflammatory condition where tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus, causing real and often severe harm to the people who live with it. Symptoms can include:
Severe or worsening menstrual pain

⚠️ Chronic pelvic pain throughout the month
⚠️ Pain during in*******se or bowel movements
⚠️ Heavy or irregular bleeding
⚠️ Unexplained fatigue or fertility challenges

If any of this sounds familiar — for yourself or someone you love — please don't normalize it. Bring it to your family physician. Early recognition and consistent primary care can make a meaningful difference in how quickly endometriosis is identified and managed.

At Orleans Family Health Clinic, we are committed to taking your symptoms seriously, listening carefully, and coordinating the care you deserve. Being rostered with a family physician you trust is one of the most important things you can do for your long-term health.

Health and happiness, hand in hand for families. 💙

💊 Changing Medication Timing for Ramadan Is a Medical Decision — Not a Clock Shift

Many medications depend on:
• Food timing
• Dose spacing
• Absorption windows
• Blood level stability

Incorrect timing can lead to:
⚠️ Loss of effectiveness
⚠️ Side effects
⚠️ Blood pressure instability
⚠️ Thyroid imbalance
⚠️ Mood destabilization
⚠️ Seizure risk

Our clinic provides:
✔️ Full medication review
✔️ Safe timing redesign
✔️ Extended-release options when appropriate
✔️ Written Ramadan dosing charts
✔️ Coordination with your pharmacist
✔️ Follow-up monitoring

Never adjust prescription timing without medical review.

ADVICE FROM YOUR DOCTOR AT OFHC: Which Pharmacy Should You Use?

Former Ontario Medical Association president Dr. Sohail Gandhi recently warned about declining satisfaction in corporate pharmacy chains—and he made a crucial point:

Pharmacists are essential members of your healthcare team. But corporate pressure, staffing shortages, and service quotas compromise care in many big-box pharmacies.

At OFHC, we believe in:
✔ Consistent pharmacists who know you
✔ Strong physician collaboration
✔ Care without corporate quotas
✔ Safe, individualized medication management
✔ Integrated care through OFHC

Healthcare should never feel transactional.
Experience Complete, Comprehensive, Caring, Connected Care—your health deserves it.

https://orleansmedical.ca/blog/2026/02/25/shingles-awareness-week/

🩺 It's Shingles Awareness Week (February 24 – March 2), and we want to make sure our patients and families have the information they need.

1 in 3 Canadians will develop shingles in their lifetime — and the risk rises significantly after age 50. Shingles isn't just a rash. Its most serious complication, postherpetic neuralgia, can cause severe nerve pain that lasts for months or even years after the infection resolves. For patients managing chronic conditions, the risks are even higher.

The good news: shingles is largely preventable. The Shingrix® vaccine offers strong protection and is recommended for adults 50 and older, as well as immunocompromised adults 18+. In Ontario, it's OHIP-covered for adults aged 65–70. Outside that window, many private plans help with the cost — and your physician can help you navigate your options.

If you're a rostered patient at Orleans Family Health Clinic and haven't discussed shingles vaccination yet, bring it up at your next visit. Your family doctor knows your full health picture — and that's exactly the right starting point for a prevention conversation like this.

🩸 Diabetes + Ramadan Requires Medical Planning — Not Self-Adjustment

Fasting changes:
• Meal timing
• Calorie intake
• Hydration patterns
• Medication absorption
• Insulin requirements

Without physician adjustment, this increases risk of:
⚠️ Hypoglycemia
⚠️ Hyperglycemia
⚠️ Dehydration
⚠️ Emergency visits

Our diabetes Ramadan reviews include:
✔️ Medication timing redesign
✔️ Insulin adjustment when required
✔️ Monitoring schedule creation
✔️ Clear break-fast glucose thresholds
✔️ Symptom action plans
✔️ Follow-up access during the month

We coordinate medication instructions with Centrum Pharmacy so dosing schedules remain consistent and reinforced.

Do not stop or retime diabetes medication on your own.
📅 Book your diabetes Ramadan planning visit now.

🌙 Ramadan Is Approaching — Has Your Family Had a Medical Fasting Review Yet?

Fasting is spiritually meaningful — but medical safety must be individualized.
At Orleans Family Health Clinic, we advise patients based on:
• Your full medical history
• Your chronic conditions
• Your medication list
• Your recent lab results
• Your overall disease control
• Your personal risk factors

This is very different from general online advice or walk-in clinic guidance.
A pre-Ramadan primary care visit helps you:
✔️ Determine if fasting is medically safe
✔️ Identify which conditions may require exemption
✔️ Adjust medication timing properly
✔️ Define clear warning symptoms
✔️ Reduce emergency risk during fasting
✔️ Enter Ramadan with confidence instead of uncertainty

We also coordinate medication timing plans with your pharmacist so instructions are consistent and safe across providers.

Continuity of care matters — especially during months with major lifestyle changes.

📅 Book your pre-Ramadan appointment now.
Health and Happiness, Hand in Hand for Families.

Ramadan Mubarak 🌙
