October marks (AAC), a time to recognize the vital role AAC plays in helping people express themselves and connect with others.

Watch as Grandview Kids client Charlie’s parents, Kara and Scott, share her journey to finding her voice through an augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) device. is most enjoyable when children and youth of all abilities are included in the spooky fun. Creating an accessible and inclusive Halloween ensures every child can take part in the excitement. By thinking ahead and making small adjustments, we can help make Halloween a celebration where everyone feels welcome and included.

Here are six spooktacular tips for accessible trick-or-treating:

1. Set up your trick-or-treat station either near the curb or sidewalk to make it easier for those with mobility challenges to access it.
2. Tone down the spooky! Refrain from using animatronics or jump scares.
3. Do not use strobe, or flashing lights due to the risk of seizures.
4. Be allergen aware! Avoid nut and dairy products. Consider having both edible and non-edible treats such as stickers and glow sticks to accommodate for diet restrictions.
5. Provide a direct route towards the trick-or-treat station. Ensure that it is well lit, and mark any hidden, or slight curbs. Set up decorative fences to guide visitors to the trick-or-treat station.
6. Be mindful that trick-or-treaters with disabilities may need additional time to cross the road.

Accessible trick-or-treating lawn signs are available in the Atrium at The Jerry Coughlan Building!

October 22 marks , a time to raise awareness about stuttering and challenge the myths that can negatively impact those who experience it. Stuttering can have a range of causes, including genetic and neurophysiological factors. Environmental influences, such as stress, negative reactions from others and pressure to stop stuttering, can also contribute to increased difficulty.

At Grandview Kids, our Speech-Language Pathology program supports children and families through education, awareness and compassion. Together, we can help debunk common myths. By fostering patient and supportive environments, we give people who stutter the space to speak and be heard. Every voice matters.
