The Public Deserves to Know What’s Happening — Psychologists in Ontario
From Dr. Emily : "I’ve spent 16 years training to become a psychologist. That’s not an exaggeration!!
5 years in an Honours undergraduate degree
2 years earning a Master’s (plus 2 more for a Master in Medical Science)
6 years in a PhD program with coursework, practica, residency, and a massive dissertation
1 year of supervised practice, while completing three licensing exams (ethics, written knowledge, oral)
For over a decade, I’ve had to say “I’m under supervision.” Every assessment, therapy, or diagnosis was reviewed by a licensed psychologist. That supervision protects clients and helps new psychologists grow."
Now, that system is at risk. The College of Psychologists and Behaviour Analysts of Ontario (CPBAO) has already:
Replaced the ethics exam with a no-fail online module
Allowed unlimited attempts on licensing exams
Removed specialty declarations (now only Health Service or I/O)
Expanded accreditation to U.S. programs beyond CPA
On Sept 26, 2025, they’ll vote on more changes:
Accepting non-CPA or international programs
Only one practicum required
No 4-year supervised work after a Master’s
No Oral Exam at all
These changes drastically reduce training. Someone could be registered as a psychologist with: one practicum, no ethics exam, no oral exam, and no extended supervision.
This isn’t just a professional issue. It’s a public safety issue. Psychologists work with trauma, serious mental illness, neurodevelopmental conditions, and crisis. This work requires advanced training, deep clinical judgment, and oversight. Cutting corners risks lives.

Ontario needs more psychologists — but we need them to be qualified.
