September is Sickle Cell Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about this blood disorder. Sickle cell disease is a mutation in the shape of red blood cells that can lead to blockages in the blood vessels causing severe chronic pain, bacterial infections, and tissue death.
In support Ontario’s community-based primary and/or specialty care providers, Dynacare has developed a pathway to help physicians ensure appropriate screening, genetic testing, and counselling for their patients who are members of an at-risk ethnic background (Asian, Mediterranean, African, Middle Eastern, Caribbean and South/Central American) and are considering pregnancy or are in the early stages of pregnancy. Speak to your healthcare provider for more information.
Learn more about Dynacare genetic testing support for blood disorders to ensure individuals receive appropriate healthcare in Ontario. The Dynacare Genetic Counselling Services can help you on your healthcare journey by reviewing your family and medical history with you and clarifying your personal risks. We can recommend genetic testing options for hereditary testing and more. Your healthcare provider can confirm your eligibility for the program and provide a referral.
