D**g Quai (Angelica sinensis), known as “female ginseng,” is an herb used in traditional Chinese medicine for women’s health, particularly for menstrual and hormonal support.

Benefits

😣Menstrual Health and PMS Relief
D**g Quai may help relieve menstrual cramps and improve blood flow, thanks to compounds like ferulic acid, which have anti-inflammatory effects (Zhou et al., 2018).

🥵Menopausal Symptom Relief
Some research suggests D**g Quai can help with hot flashes and hormone balance during menopause, especially when used with other herbs (Bai et al., 2007).

🤲🏻 Circulation Support
D**g Quai may improve circulation by slightly thinning the blood, potentially helping with cold extremities, though it should be used cautiously if on blood-thinning medications (Wu et al., 2019).

Side Effects and Precautions

Blood-Thinning Effects: D**g Quai may not be suitable for those on blood thinners or with bleeding issues.

Hormonal Interactions: It’s not recommended for people with hormone-sensitive conditions (e.g., certain cancers).

Sun Sensitivity: Some people may experience increased sensitivity to sunlight when using D**g Quai, so sunscreen is advisable.

In summary, D**g Quai is valued for its support with menstrual discomfort, menopausal symptoms, and circulation. However, because it can affect blood thickness and hormones, it’s best to consult a healthcare provider before use, especially if you have specific health conditions or take medications.

Chaste tree berry (Vitex agnus-castus), also known as vitex or monk’s pepper, is commonly used to support women’s hormonal health. Research supports its benefits for menstrual and menopausal symptoms due to its effects on hormone regulation.

Potential Benefits

😠Menstrual Health and PMS Relief
Chaste tree berry is often used to alleviate PMS symptoms, like mood swings, breast tenderness, and bloating. Studies show it can reduce elevated prolactin, a hormone linked to PMS symptoms, by acting on dopamine receptors in the pituitary gland (Schellenberg, 2001). This hormonal balance may ease PMS symptoms and support overall menstrual health.
• Reference: Schellenberg, R. (2001). Treatment for the premenstrual syndrome with agnus castus fruit extract: prospective, randomized, placebo-controlled study. BMJ, 322(7279), 134-137.

🥵Menopause Symptom Support
Some research suggests chaste tree berry can help alleviate menopausal symptoms like hot flashes and mood changes, though findings are mixed. Studies indicate its potential for mild hormone-balancing effects during menopause, possibly by interacting with progesterone receptors and aiding hormonal stability (Naser et al., 2011).
• Reference: Naser, B., Schnitker, J., Minkin, M. J., & Tauchert, M. (2011). A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of a fixed herbal combination in menopausal complaints. Journal of Women’s Health, 20(8), 1253-1261.

🤰Fertility Support
For women with irregular cycles, chaste tree berry may help by promoting hormonal balance and regulating ovulation. Some studies show that vitex can help stimulate progesterone production, which is critical for cycle regularity and fertility (Bachmann & Leiblum, 2004).
• Reference: Bachmann, G. A., & Leiblum, S. R. (2004). The impact of hormones on menopausal sexuality: a literature review. Menopause, 11(1), 120-130.

In summary, chaste tree berry has a strong traditional and scientific backing for supporting PMS, menopausal symptoms, cycle regularity, and acne. However, because of its effects on hormones, it’s best to use it with guidance from a healthcare professional to ensure safe and effective results.

St. John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum) is a well-studied herbal remedy, primarily known for treating mild to moderate depression. Studies indicate that it’s as effective as some standard antidepressants like SSRIs, especially for mild to moderate cases, with potentially fewer side effects (Linde & Mulrow, 2008; Ng et al., 2017). However, for severe depression, evidence is limited. The active compounds, hyperforin and hypericin, seem to influence mood-regulating neurotransmitters, including serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine.

St. John’s wort has also been used for wound healing and skin conditions. Animal studies suggest that topical application may speed up healing and reduce inflammation due to its antioxidant and antibacterial properties (Süntar et al., 2012). There is some evidence it may help alleviate mild menopausal symptoms, like hot flashes, though more research is needed (Abdali et al., 2010).

However, St. John’s wort can interact with many medications, including birth control pills, anticoagulants, and certain antidepressants, as it affects liver enzymes that metabolize these drugs (Izzo & Ernst, 2009). This makes it essential to consult a healthcare provider before use. It can also increase photosensitivity, especially in higher doses, making users more prone to sunburn (Brockmöller et al., 1997).

In summary, St. John’s wort has strong support for treating mild to moderate depression and promising but preliminary evidence for skin health and menopausal symptoms. However, due to potential drug interactions and side effects, careful use under medical supervision is advised.

It seems my plants are really loving my new office space!
A good reminder to me… our environment matters. We can do so much work on health and wellness from the inside out, but if our environment isn’t supporting us we might stall a bit.

That is one of the reasons I like having plants around me. Living and working in a city limits my exposure to nature but I can water and tend to my little plants and feel more connected. They are thriving here and so am I!
