Summer is ending and it’s off to school and starting daycare at my house so I’ve been thinking a lot about transitions and change.

I’ve compiled my top tips to help you have a smooth transition in your day-to-day or to prepare for major changes like starting daycare.

1. Explain - Prepare your child by talking about what’s to come. Remember to use simple language

2. Read - use books to help your child relate to the new experience. We love the Hello Genius series but I’m happy to help you find a book for a specific need.

3. Routines - Establish consistent ways of doing things to help your child learn what to expect.

4. Make it visual - pictures don’t disappear like words so they add extra information and help your child understand and remember what’s to come.

We cover transitions in my toddler communication classes starting in September (for kiddos 12-18 months). Link to register in my bio. If your child is a different age and you have questions, shoot me a message and I’m happy to help!

Taking a trip with your baby or toddler this summer?

Check out my tips to encourage their communication development
while travelling.

Our recent weekend trip got me thinking of how many new things my little one was seeing and experiencing. And I noticed her talking about new things as well.
A lot of her new words were junk foods from the hotel buffet, but so be it!

Sometimes little ones can have a bit of a language explosion on a trip when they are exposed to so many new things. Other times, they may be more quiet, especially if they are overstimulated, overtired or unsettled. Either is normal!

But by using a few language strategies before, during and after the trip, you can add new language to their new experiences and support their communication development.

Swipe for the tips.

And I’m curious, if you have taken a trip with your little one recently, what did you notice about their communication?

Inspired by our visit to .ca this week, I decide to share some of the benefits of sensory play for communication development.

Why is sensory play important for language development?

Actively Engages your Child

Children learn more language when they are engaged and motivated. Little ones love exploring and can be more engaged when we use multiple senses. We can follow their lead and talk about what they are doing at the moment.

Opportunity to teach new vocabulary and word types

Sensory exploration can provide a situation to model descriptive words (e.g. soft, dry, sticky). You can also add action words by commenting on what your child is doing with the materials (e.g. pour, scoop, paint).

You can join in and play

Parents can engage in sensory play alongside their child. This provides a model for children to imitate with their actions, sounds and words.

Can incorporate pretend play

Pretend play is linked to language development as in order to pretend you need to use a symbol for something else. By adding animals or characters into sensory play, this can spark engaging pretend play.

Do you have questions about your child's communication development? Are you wondering if they are on track, or if there's anything you can do to help their language development along?

Let's take away the stigma from checking in with a speech-language pathologist. It doesn't mean your child is delayed or won't catch up.

is all about helping parents feel empowered, reassured and proactive about their child's communication.

From learning some communication strategies and tweaking your interaction style with your child, you can support them to become more effective communicators.

Are you teaching your baby to communicate and just not sure what’s best?

As a mama, I know what it’s like to struggle with worries and questions about our kids.
-How much should I read to her?
-When will she say her first word?
-What learning activities should we do at home?

Even as a speech-language pathologist, I didn’t feel confident that I was doing all the things to raise my children into good communicators.

When the pandemic hit, my first baby was 8 months old. I needed a project and threw myself into developing baby activities. I soon realized that she wasn’t into many of the activities we tried, but what mattered was quality interactions. I drew on many of the communication strategies that I used in daily work with clients and started following her lead. I still did plan activities to give us structure to the day but tried to take some of the pressure off myself to plan the perfect activity.

Fast forward to baby 2 (now 14 months). The second kid was definitely easier but having 2 kids was definitely not. I had forgotten much of what I’d learned the first time around and had more questions and worries.
-Why is she not babbling yet?
-Are we speaking enough Spanish to her?
-Is she exposed to too much screen time?

During my mat leave, I decided to start up Little Goose Speech to give parents a baby class that can give them easy-to-implement strategies and ideas to give their child a strong language foundation in everyday play. We are underway with our second round of classes and sign up is on for spring classes starting end of March.

So if you’re not feeling so confident or have questions about raising your little one into a strong communicator, Little Goose Speech is here for you with parent-baby classes that teach early communication strategies and reassure you that you’re doing a great job!

Thanks to for inspiring me to write this post and share the Little Goose story.

Fun fact, I call my kids ‘goose’ 🐣 so that’s where the name came from.

So excited for Baby and Toddler Communication classes to start next week!

There are still a few spots left to join us. DM me or visit the link in bio to register.

Week 1’s theme is All About Winter.
We will be singing, reading and playing about winter as we learn about communication development.

Winter also offers new sensory experiences (Brr! 🥶❄️🧊) to learn from. Join us to find out fun ways to bring winter sensory indoors for your little one.

As a speech-language pathologist, I love using seasonal themes because they introduce new vocabulary and connect new words to baby’s current experiences.
