Student run conference to promote, inspire and inform students about career paths in healthcare.

The University of Ottawa Health Symposium (UOHS) is a undergraduate health care conference that aims to promote student interest in healthcare. UOHS aims to be an important event for bright and motivated students who aspire to become healthcare professionals. Our goal is to provoke discussion on the many facets of health care, both practical and research based, and to explore the shifts in health care in an ever-changing Canadian demographic. In 2011, the inaugural conference with the theme of “Innovation in Health Care” was held, and featured seminars by a variety of renowned healthcare experts. With an attendance of over 150 delegates, 6 seminar speakers and 2 keynote speakers, UOHS was a great success and became a unique resource for university students to educate themselves and initiate change in the Canadian health care community.

UOHS was founded on a passion to explore thought-provoking areas of healthcare, expand your preconception of healthcare, and most of all, introduce students to the full range of possibilities! The intersection of machine learning, informatics and healthcare is an emerging field with the potential to transform healthcare, and above all, very cool! CSUO 2022 est fière de presenter notre dernière panelliste, le professeur de McGill; Dr. Joe Schwarcz!

Comme scientiste, c’est très commun de faire attention à la communication aux autre scientifiques, mais pour créer un impacte pour la société, il faut aussi faire attention à le communication au publique.

Dr. Schwarcz est le directeur de le Bureau pour Science et Société à McGill. De plus, il est le gagnant de plusieurs prix prestigieux, tel que le Prix Grady-Stack pour la démystification de Chimie (ou il est le premier non-américain à recevoir cette honneur) et le 2010 « Montréal Medal », un prix pour des contributions significants au cours de vie si la domaine de chimie en Canada.

UOHS 2022 is pleased to present our last Panellist, Dr. Joe Schwarcz!

It is common in Academia to understand communication to other academics, but it’s equally important to communicate science to the general public. (Has anyone watched Netflix’s “don’t look up”?) if anything, the public health ramifications of educating the public has only been highlighted by the Pandemic.

Dr. Schwarcz is the director of the McGill office for Science and Society. Furthermore, he’s an award-winning public figure having been honoured with the American Chemical Society’s prestigious Grady-Stack award for Demystifying chemistry (he’s the first non-American to ever achieve this!) and the 2010 Montreal Medal, which is the Canadian Chemical Institute’s premier award recognizing lifetime contributions to Chemistry in Canada. We at UOHS are so pumped to hear this world-class science communicator communicate! You’ll even get the chance to interact with the panel and ask him questions.

Dr. Sinclair est neurochirurgien EXPERT. Il êtait même instructeur clinical de neurochirurgie à l’Université Stanford! Maintenant, il est Directeur d’Oncologie Neurochirurgical à l’Hôpital d’Ottawa.

Dr. Sinclair is a world-class neurosurgeon, even having been appointed as a clinical instructor of neurosurgery at Stanford, where he also did his fellowships in cerebrovascular medicine and stereotactic radiosurgery. He is a pioneer of new techniques who brought the Cyberknife, Advanced Awake Craniotomy Techniques and Fluorescence-guided surgery to the Ottawa Hospital, where he serves as Director of Neurosurgical Oncology!
