Digestive discomfort is a signal that our digestive system is struggling and needs help.

The other evening, we tried a local eatery. The menu looked appealing, and although it wasn't something I normally ate, I was curious to try out a cachapa (cornbread bun) with pulled pork, which sounded delicious!

Halfway through, I stopped, I could feel my stomach was bloating, and not happy with the situation. I felt tired and uncomfortable. When I got home I had a ginger and lemon tea, until everything settled. The next day still felt a little 'off' but way better than the night before.

I realise this is a sensation that many of my clients live with daily, and it's not fun.

However, instead of looking for the root cause, we treat the symptoms by taking these types of medication, which does not bring resolution to the problem.

Digestive discomfort is often perceived as a normal part of the process, but it is far from being normal, and when not taken seriously, it can lead to further health issues down the road.

The causes can be varied; however, a few points to think of:

- Eating a diet composed of highly refined food products
- A diet containing 'hidden sugars'
- Eating quickly
- Eating starch-heavy meals
- Eating every 2 hours

With education, support, and guidance, digestive discomfort can be a thing of the past.

So, next time you feel uncomfortable, take a few moments and see if you can find the cause.

The way our body functions is both simple and intricate.

We often use context and ideas that, in a natural setting, have no value.

For example, calories.

Our brain can't count calories; it does not add them up throughout the day, giving you a total count at the end of the day, as an app will.

Instead, our body works hard to break down the food that we give it, so that it can maintain our energy levels and thousands of other functions, so that we can go about our day.

When it comes to food, our body will react to:

The quality of the food we eat
The frequency of our meals
The quantity that we eat
The variety in our diet

These are concepts that our body does understand, and when these ideas are used and refined on an individual level, we will have a body that functions well.

For the average person, there is no need for calories; however, there is a need to understand on a basic level how our bodies function, with regards to the food we eat.

Thinking outside the box is something I've learned to do over the years.

Nutrition and well-being are not linear, and neither is our food.

I work in terms of concepts and adapt them to each and every client, and I do the same with the food I eat.

Here are three fun ideas on how you can include the salad topper in your meals:

Breakfast - I add a handfull to my morning Greek yoghurt bowl, it adds a little crunch and sweetness.
Baking - I will add a handfull to any muffin, cake, oat bars mix
Stir fry - I add a handful to bring in the crunch and sweetness

Once we understand how fun food can be when cooking, it relieves much of the pressure that we often feel when trying to get everything right.

Instead, I sometimes just try something out in a slightly different way and often come up with some fun, simple ideas to keep things tasty and easy.

Did you know that dehydration affects both our mental and physical wellbeing?

We are 60% made up of fluids so dehydration can lead to symptoms of ‘brain fog’.

Our brain is bathed in cerebrospinal fluids, so a lack of hydration will impact brain functions often seen as:

💦 slower mental processing
💦 poor sleep
💦 memory is slower
💦 increase cortisol
💦 slower gut function
💦 feeling tired and lethargic

We wake up dehydrated after a nights sleep, so a simple way to get started is to have a glass of water first thing in the morning.
