Before children can regulate their emotions, attention, and bodies on their own, they first learn how to do it with the help of a supportive adult. This process is called co-regulation, and it’s a foundational part of both OT and PT.

Here’s why co-regulation matters in pediatric therapy:

✨ Helps children feel safe and supported
When a therapist or caregiver provides a calm, responsive presence, it helps a child’s nervous system settle. Feeling safe allows children to engage more fully in play, learning, and movement.

🧠 Builds the foundation for self-regulation
Children develop the ability to regulate their own emotions and bodies after repeatedly experiencing regulation with another person. Co-regulation teaches the brain what calm and organized feels like.

🎯 Improves participation in therapy activities
When children are regulated, they can better focus, follow directions, try new movements, and engage in challenging tasks.

🤝 Strengthens connection and trust
Co-regulation builds a strong therapeutic relationship. When children feel understood and supported, they are more willing to explore, take risks, and build new skills.

🌈 Supports emotional and sensory development
Strategies like rhythmic movement, deep pressure, breathing, and modeling calm responses help children learn how to manage big feelings and sensory experiences.

💡Regulation before expectation. When we help children regulate first, learning and skill development naturally follow.
