🦴 October 19th was  Pediatric Bone & Joint Day!

Let’s talk about your child’s bones and joints for a second, because they do so much more than just help kids move. 💪

Healthy bones and joints give your child the foundation for playing, running, sitting upright in class, writing, climbing, and doing all the things they love. When there’s pain, stiffness, or weakness, it can make everyday movement feel hard, and that can affect confidence, coordination, and participation.

That’s where physiotherapy and occupational therapy come in.
💚 Our PTs focus on strength, balance, posture and managing pain, helping kids move freely and comfortably.
💚 Our OTs help kids use those strong bodies for play, school, and daily routines, while teaching strategies to protect joints and reduce pain.
Together, they help kids move with comfort, confidence, and joy. 🌟

💬 Want to support your childs bone and joint health? Let’s chat! Book an assessment with our pediatric therapy team, we’ll help you understand what’s going on and how to support your child’s growth.

🌊 Looking for a fun, motivating way to help your child reach their therapy goals?

Aquatic Therapy blends play, movement, and the natural properties of water to support a wide range of OT and PT goals.

💧 How it supports OT goals:
🔹Provides calming sensory input through deep pressure and resistance
▫️Helps organize and regulate the nervous system
🔹Offers rich tactile and proprioceptive feedback for body awareness
▫️Encourages bilateral coordination and crossing midline through play
🔹Builds fine motor skills with activities like squeezing, pouring, and retrieving toys

🌊 How it supports PT goals:
▫️Buoyancy reduces joint impact while encouraging freedom of movement
🔹Water resistance builds strength, balance, and endurance
▫️Constant motion of the water challenges core stability
🔹Supports smoother, more coordinated movement patterns
▫️Builds confidence with safe, supported mobility practice

💦 Aquatic Therapy turns hard work into play, helping kids grow stronger, more confident, and more regulated through every splash!

😂 This looks ridiculous... but it’s actually brilliant!

What you’re seeing is called “Silly Crawling”, an exercise that helps integrate the Asymmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex (ATNR) 👶➡️💪

🚦 When the ATNR isn’t fully integrated, kids might show signs like:
- Trouble crossing midline (e.g., switching hands or reaching across their body)
- Awkward pencil grasp or messy handwriting
- Difficulty tracking words while reading
- Poor coordination or balance

👀 So yes, it looks silly! But this playful movement builds:
✨ Reflex integration — syncing the head and body to move together smoothly
✨ Core and shoulder strength — essential for posture and fine motor skills
✨ Bilateral coordination — helping both sides of the brain and body communicate
✨ Focus and regulation — because organized movement = organized mind

💡 These foundational movements set the stage for success in school, sports, and daily life!

📍 Curious if reflex integration could support your child?

🎶 The Power of Rhythm in Action! 🧠💪

During one of our recent mentoring sessions, Senior OT Heather Hodgins Chan explored how music and movement work hand-in-hand to support motor praxis, the ability to organize, plan, and carry out purposeful movement.

By pairing movement with rhythm, we’re not just dancing to the beat, we’re building the foundations for motor planning, coordination, and body awareness. When rhythm is introduced, the brain receives consistent sensory input, helping children sequence movements, stay regulated, and move with greater control and confidence.

🎵 The benefits go far beyond movement:
✨ Enhances academic learning through rhythm, timing, and pattern recognition
✨ Strengthens social connections through shared play and teamwork
✨ Boosts independence and self-confidence as children master new skills

At On The Ball, we love blending evidence-based practice with creativity, showing that therapy can be both effective and joyful!

🎲 Game on for visual perceptual skills! 👀

Playtime can be so much more than fun, these classic games secretly build visual processing, attention, and problem-solving skills that kids use every single day!

🧩 Hunt & Seek (I Spy–style games) help kids strengthen visual scanning and attention to detail as they search through busy pictures. They also build figure-ground perception,  the ability to find what’s important in a cluttered space (like a messy classroom desk!). Plus, they boost language development and patience as kids describe what they find and keep looking until every item is spotted.

🎲 Zingo is a fast-paced matching game that sharpens visual discrimination and processing speed, while also supporting working memory as kids scan, match, and recall pictures and words. It’s a fun way to reinforce early literacy skills and practice turn-taking and social interaction, perfect for group or sibling play!

🟣 Spot It! challenges players to find the common image between any two cards, strengthening visual processing, attention, and hand-eye coordination. It also encourages flexibility and quick problem solving, helping kids think on their feet while having a blast.

✨ At On The Ball, we love using play-based activities like these to strengthen the foundational skills kids need to thrive in school, at home, and in everyday life.
