Why are button batteries so dangerous?
Because when one is swallowed, it starts burning through internal tissues within a couple of hours, which can have tragic consequences.

🧠 What Should Kids (Ages 8–10) Know About the News?
How to Raise Informed — Not Anxious — Children

We’re raising kids in a world where news is everywhere.
📱 It’s on their devices
📺 It’s on in the background
💬 It’s talked about at school

By ages 8–10, children are listening, absorbing, and asking questions.

But here’s the reality:
👉 They are aware enough to worry
👉 But not yet emotionally equipped to process everything

So the question becomes:
What should we share… and what should we filter?

✅ What Kids Should Know
We don’t need to hide the world — but we do need to translate it.

🌍 Keep It Simple
Children can understand something happened without needing details.
“Something happened, and people are working to help.”

🛟 Focus on What Impacts Them
Children benefit from understanding:
Basic safety situations
Weather events
What to do in emergencies
When kids know what to do, they feel more in control.

❤️ Use It as a Teaching Tool
The news can reinforce:
Kindness
Empathy
Helping others
“That’s what strong communities do.”

🧩 Start Media Literacy Early
👉 Not everything online is real
Ask:
“Where did you hear that?”
“Do you think that’s true?”

🚫 What Kids Don’t Need to Know
❌ Graphic Details
No violent images or disturbing specifics.
❌ Adult Fear
Avoid “what if” thinking — kids absorb our tone.
❌ Constant Exposure
Repetition makes danger feel closer and ongoing.
❌ Complex Conflict
Politics and deep issues can wait.

⚖️ The Shift That Changes Everything
👉 The “3-Part Rule”
What happened (simple)
What’s being done to help
Why they are safe

💬 What Kids Are Really Asking
👉 “Am I safe?”
Reassure:
“Yes, you are safe.”
“Grown-ups are taking care of it.”
“I would tell you if it affected us.”

🚩 When It’s Too Much
Watch for:
Trouble sleeping
Anxiety
Clinginess
Repeated questions
Reduce exposure and reconnect.

🧡 Final Thought
We’re not raising kids to be unaware —
we’re raising kids to feel:
✔ Safe
✔ Capable
✔ Confident

💛 A Simple Friendship Guide You Can Share With Your Kids
Friendships can be tricky—especially for kids.

At ages 8–10, friendships start to feel deeper… but also more complicated.
There can be hurt feelings, misunderstandings, and moments where kids don’t know what to do next.
Instead of telling kids who they should or shouldn’t be friends with, we can teach them something even more important:
👉 How to choose healthy friendships.
Here’s a simple, kid-friendly guide you can share with your child 👇

🌟 What Makes a Good Friend?
A good friend is someone who:
Makes you feel happy and included
Is kind and respectful
Tells the truth
Cares about your feelings
Has fun with you
(No one is perfect—but good friends try their best.)

😕 When Something Feels Wrong…
It’s okay to speak up.
Encourage your child to say:
“That hurt my feelings.”
“I didn’t like that.”
“Please don’t do that again.”

🧠 The “Friendship Check”
Teach your child to ask:
Do they make me feel good most of the time?
Can I trust them?
Do they try to fix things when they mess up?

🔁 Mistake or Pattern?
This is a big one.
✔ A healthy friend:
Says sorry
Tries to do better
Cares that you’re upset
❗ If the same hurtful behaviour keeps happening…
That’s a pattern, not just a mistake.

⏸️ It’s Okay to Take a Break
Friendship doesn’t have to be all or nothing.
Kids can:
Take space
Spend time with other friends
Be friendly without being “best friends”

💪 The Most Important Lesson
Remind your child:
💛 You deserve friends who are kind, honest, and make you feel good about yourself.

These are the kinds of life skills that build confidence, independence, and strong decision-making—far beyond the classroom.

Anti-Bullying Day Isn’t Just for Kids 💗
Today we talk about bullying.

We post in pink.
We teach kindness.
We remind children to include others.

And that matters.

But here’s the harder conversation:

Bullying doesn’t magically disappear when we turn 18.

Sometimes it just becomes more subtle.

It shows up as:

• Social exclusion
• Labelling families
• Gossip disguised as “concern”
• Reputation damage behind closed doors
• Protecting our own while attacking others

In schools.
In community groups.
In workplaces.
On sidelines.

The uncomfortable truth?

Children often learn relational aggression by watching adults model it.

If we want to raise resilient, kind, emotionally strong kids — we have to examine our own behaviour too.

Because anti-bullying isn’t just about teaching children not to exclude.

It’s about teaching them how to handle:

• Conflict
• Feedback
• Accountability
• Discomfort
• Social power

And they learn that by watching us. 👀

Resilient kids are not raised in environments where:

• Ego overrides growth
• Reputation matters more than repair
• Accountability feels like an attack
• Exclusion is used as leverage

They are raised in environments where adults:

✔️ Regulate before reacting
✔️ Separate behaviour from identity
✔️ Allow room for mistakes
✔️ Refuse to participate in gossip
✔️ Choose integrity over influence

Anti-Bullying Day isn’t just a reminder to correct children.

It’s an invitation for adults to lead better.

Because the strongest protection we can give our kids isn’t shielding them from every hard moment.

It’s modelling how to move through hard moments with character. 💛

Kindness isn’t weakness.
Accountability isn’t betrayal.
And leadership isn’t loud — it’s steady.

If we truly want bullying to stop, the work starts with us. ✨

🧠 Easing Anxiety in 9–12 Year Olds — While Building Real Independence
Parents of 9–12 year olds often tell me:

“My child wants to stay home alone… but gets nervous.”
“They seem confident at school but fall apart at home.”
“They worry about ‘what if’ scenarios.”

This age is a turning point.

They crave independence.
But their nervous system is still learning how to manage big emotions.

Here’s what I remind parents:

Anxiety at this age doesn’t mean they’re not ready.
It means they need skills — not just reassurance.

Instead of:
“It’s fine. Nothing will happen.”

Try:
“What would you do if that happened?”

When children know what to do, anxiety decreases.

Because confidence doesn’t come from avoiding hard things.
It comes from practising them.

That’s exactly why I created Safety Tree’s Home Alone Safety for Kids Course.

We don’t just talk about safety — we practice it.

✔️ What to do if someone knocks at the door
✔️ Handling emergencies calmly
✔️ Basic first aid
✔️ Internet and phone safety
✔️ Creating a personalized home-alone plan
✔️ Tricky people vs Strangers

When kids rehearse real-life scenarios, something shifts.

They move from:
“What if something bad happens?”

To:
“I know what to do.”

And that belief changes everything.

🌿 March Break is the perfect time to build calm confidence — not just fill time.

If your 9–12 year old is ready for more independence (but still a little nervous), this course bridges that gap.
