Yesterday we, a couple of apprentices and myself, were in the apothecary and made an Usnea tincture. When we put the lichen in the grinder we were so surprised to to find the inner fungi (the stretchy string like substance covered by algae) did not powder but huddled in a tangled ball like yarn a kitten has tumbled and tossed. In the picture you can see the white fungi and the sage green algae.

Seeds for this year's dyer's garden. I have a few dye plants in the garden now, the plan is to create a diverse dye garden... a steep learning curve, when to harvest, parts of the plants and preparing the dye. Dying fabric has such an interesting parallel history to plant medicine. For example did you know that in seeking a brilliant yellow dye, mustard gas was discovered which led to the foundational understanding of chemotherapy.

I am writing a paper on what the word “healing” means in context to being a herbalist. Sometimes I feel like we have lost the meaning of the word “healing” it is used so often. Often now I will ask folks what they mean when they use this word to describe an experience or a wish. This is an interesting study of the word “healing”. I just came in from a walk in the wood. It snowed all day yesterday. The forest is white and sparkling. Earlier in the day I stood at the window and watched the last of the snow falling. The flakes tossed and turned, spiralled and rose only to tumble again. They reminded me of crows playing in the raucous winds that arrive with Spring.

A crow called out while I walked in the woods. Soon with the light returning I will begin to watch for the crows gathering. It said when the crows gather the sap in the trees begin to rise. It is then fires blaze boiling off the water in the maple's sap to make delicious maple syrup.

There is something so reassuring and pleasurable understanding the language nature has spoken season after season after season. I wish you many moments welcoming the return of the light. - Abrah

Yesterday the sky was full of tiny snowflakes. Lily and I went into a stand of white pines and while Lily sniffed the many criss crossing tracks of squirrels, rabbits and a fox, I laid in the snow watching the snowflakes fall. And I imagined the journées of the drops of water that are now frozen crystals drifting down to earth from heavy grey clouds. Each snow flake was once a drop of water in a deep ocean current, or a mist rising from a river at dawn or a tear hastily wiped away with the hopes of no one noticing a moment of vulnerability. Thank you water for all you do for all of life.
