After our recent heart health webinar, we felt uneasy.
We spent much of the evening discussing cholesterol, statins, and GLP-1 medications. As naturopathic doctors, we wondered if we should have focused more on supplements and natural alternatives.
But when we reflected on our patients, something became clear: Most who hesitate about medication are not anti-medication, they simply do not understand their personal risk. They improve their diet. They exercise. They reduce alcohol. And sometimes their cholesterol still rises significantly.
We have romanticized “doing it naturally.” We assume that if we try hard enough, we should always be able to fix it ourselves. And if we need medication, we have failed.
That narrative is flawed.
Lifestyle is foundational, but it isn’t always sufficient. Lifestyle is often enough in early days. Sometimes one needs lifestyle plus targeted supplementation . And sometimes lifestyle plus medication is what safely reduces risk.
That is not surrender - it’s personalized medicine at play.
The most appreciated part of the webinar? The nuanced discussion about cholesterol and statins.
People want multiple regulated professionals in the same room, bringing perspective, nuance, and discussion instead of polarization.
And that is the kind of medicine we are committed to practicing: collaborative, evidence-informed and centered on the individual.

Feeling stiff, foggy, or not quite yourself?
If this sounds familiar, it could be low omega-3 intake.
Common signs:
✅ Stiff joints
✅ Dry eyes or skin
✅ Brain fog or low mood
✅ Slow recovery
Omega-3s reduce inflammation, improve heart function, and enhance brain health. With the right amount, you may feel clearer, move more comfortably, and recover better.
Fish oil provides EPA and DHA, the active forms your body uses. NutriChem’s Pure Premium Fish Oil is sourced from sardines and anchovies, highly purified, and concentrated for effective dosing.
Look for clearly listed EPA and DHA amounts, high potency, and verified purity testing.
The takeaway? Health isn’t one-size-fits-all. The best decisions happen when cardiology, pharmacy, and naturopathic medicine can sit at the same table.
Check out what they agreed on, and where they respectfully disagreed. 👀

So many women come to see us looking to support their health, often because they’ve been told that prevention needs to start early. And that part is true.
What’s often missing is 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁.
Health doesn’t exist in a vacuum, and it doesn’t look the same in every season of life. There are times when you have the capacity to focus deeply on nutrition, movement, sleep, and recovery. And there are times when your energy and attention are rightly directed elsewhere (toward your career, your family, your relationships, your education, or your own inner work).
That doesn’t mean you’re neglecting your health. It means you’re making intentional trade-offs.
Social media often frames hard work and challenge as inherently harmful to the body. But the body is resilient. When it’s properly nourished, supported, and given space to recover, it’s designed to adapt, not break.
This isn’t about pushing harder or pulling back completely.
It’s about choosing the right level of support for the season you’re in, setting boundaries that protect your capacity, and understanding that balance is built over time (not achieved all at once).
You don’t need to optimize every part of your life simultaneously. You need to move through it thoughtfully, one season at a time.

A cardiologist, a naturopath, and a pharmacist walk into a room… and instead of arguing, they agree on one thing: heart health advice has gotten confusing.
That’s why NutriChem and Cardiac Longevity Clinic are bringing three disciplines together for one grounded, practical conversation in our upcoming webinar, 𝗠𝘆𝘁𝗵𝘀 & 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵: 𝗔𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗹.
🗓 Wednesday, February 25

💻 Live webinar + Q&A
This conversation brings together three complementary perspectives for a truly full view of cardiovascular care:
➡️ Cardiologist: Dr. Behn Banihashemi
➡️ Naturopathic Doctor: Dr. Emma Pollon-Macleod
➡️ Clinical Pharmacist: Dr. Adam Livingston
Topics will include:
✅ How clinicians decide when statins make sense (and when they don’t)
✅ Supplements: supportive tools vs. false promises
✅ The cardiovascular impact of hormones across different life stages
✅ GLP-1 medications and where they fit in long-term heart health
✅ What meaningful heart-health testing actually looks like
The goal isn’t to tell you what to take, it’s to help you understand how informed decisions are made, and why personalized care matters.
Mood changes, irritability, disrupted sleep… do these sound familiar to you?
These are some of the most common concerns women raise during perimenopause.
According to .sophiepm, these symptoms are often connected to changes in progesterone, but addressing them starts with understanding the full picture.
At NutriChem, care begins with a comprehensive assessment, guided by bloodwork that looks at hormones, key nutrients (like iron, B12, and vitamin D) and thyroid function. This helps identify what systems need support and where imbalances may be contributing to symptoms.
From there, treatment focuses first on diet and lifestyle, the foundation of every personalized plan. When appropriate, hormone support such as progesterone therapy may be introduced to help support mood, sleep, and cycle-related symptoms.
Our approach is always whole-body and individualized, focused on long-term, sustainable health, not quick fixes.

Heart health advice online is louder than ever, and often more extreme than helpful.
One day, it’s “statins are dangerous.” Next, it’s “supplements fix everything.” And somewhere in the middle, you’re left wondering what actually applies to you.
That’s why NutriChem, in collaboration with Cardiac Longevity Clinic, is hosting 𝗠𝘆𝘁𝗵𝘀 & 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵: 𝗔𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗹, a practical, evidence-informed webinar designed to cut through fear-based messaging and one-size-fits-all recommendations.

💻 Live webinar + Q&A
This discussion brings together three expert perspectives for a truly full view of cardiovascular care:
➡️ Cardiologist, Dr. Behn Banihashemi, MD
➡️ Naturopathic doctor, Dr. Emma Pollon-Macleod, ND
➡️ Clinical pharmacist, Dr. Adam Livingston, PharmD
Together, they’ll tackle the five heart-health questions they’re asked most often, including:
✅ Statins: what’s fact, what’s fear, and who actually benefits
✅ Supplements: Which ones benefit your heart?
✅ Hormones & heart health (menopause, testosterone, and cardiovascular risk)
✅ GLP-1 medications like Ozempic: breakthrough tool or trend?
✅ What it really means to “check your heart health”
You’ll leave with a clearer understanding of the why behind common recommendations, and how cardiology, integrative care and medication management fit together in real-world, personalized decision-making.
We’ll wrap up with a live Q&A and share next steps for anyone looking for support with cardiovascular testing, risk factors, or an individualized plan.
The biggest hormone buzzword Dr. Emma Pollon-MacLeod is hearing lately? 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗹.
But before blaming cortisol for every symptom, it’s worth understanding what it actually tells us, and what it usually doesn’t.
True cortisol disorders are rare. Symptoms like fatigue, dizziness, salt cravings, or irregular periods are often caused by other underlying issues, which is why cortisol is never assessed on its own.
When we test cortisol, it’s done through bloodwork and reviewed alongside other key markers, including:
✅ Testosterone
✅ DHEA
✅ 17-Hydroxyprogesterone
✅ Electrolytes
✅ Aldosterone
So what are we really looking for?
➡️ Low cortisol may point to adrenal insufficiency (such as Addison’s disease)
➡️ High cortisol can indicate conditions like Cushing’s syndrome
And sometimes, cortisol looks “normal,” but other hormones tell a different story. For example, elevated DHEA or testosterone combined with irregular periods may prompt us to investigate conditions like congenital adrenal hyperplasia.
Alternatively, high cortisol on labs ≠ always high stress. Oral contraceptives can elevate 𝘧𝘳𝘦𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘴𝘰𝘭 on bloodwork without classic symptoms.
This is why personalized medicine matters. Hormones don’t work in isolation, and neither should your diagnosis.
If you’re wondering whether cortisol is actually the issue, the best place to start is a proper assessment. Chat with us at NutriChem to uncover the real root cause: https://nutrichem.com/clinic/

In 1981, Kent Macleod saw a gap in healthcare services available in Ottawa. He set out to create a facility dedicated to offering his patients effective, individualized solutions as a natural alternative to the traditional ways of treating illnesses. Essentially, his goal was to empower his patients to feel good, to get better, and to take full control of their health.
Just a year after completing his pharmacy degree from the University of Toronto, he started by buying a bankrupt pharmacy on Ottawa’s west end. From there, he set out to create a health brand that would become synonymous with quality care.
