🌟 What Is Shockwave Therapy? 🌟

If you’ve been dealing with stubborn pain that just won’t go away—especially in your heels, elbows, shoulders, or tendons—shockwave therapy might help!

Shockwave therapy is a quick, non-invasive treatment that uses gentle acoustic pulses to stimulate healing in injured tissues. Most sessions take just a few minutes, and many people feel relief within a few weeks.

Shockwave therapy delivers controlled acoustic pulses into the targeted area. These pulses:
• Improve blood flow
• Stimulate the formation of new blood vessels
• Increase cellular metabolism
• Break down calcifications or scar-tissue adhesions
• Modulate pain signals by affecting nerve fibers

The overall goal is to encourage the body’s natural healing processes, especially in tissues with poor blood supply (like tendons).

✨ Great for:
• Plantar fasciitis
• Achilles pain
• Tennis elbow
• Shoulder tendinopathy
• Chronic muscle or tendon pain

✨ Benefits:
• No needles
• No downtime
• Helps boost your body’s natural healing
• Can work when stretching, rest, or other treatments haven’t been enough

A little soreness afterward is normal, but most people tolerate it very well.

If you’re tired of ongoing pain and want to get back to moving comfortably, shockwave therapy could be worth a try! 💙

Hello!

It’s been a while, time flies when you’re busy with patient care ☺️. Most people associate chiropractors with spinal adjustments, which do help increase joint mobilty and function. But, aside from adjustments, in our clinic we also use other treatment methods to get patients feeling their best, such as soft tissue work, rehab, and shockwave therapy.

I had never worked with shockwave therapy before moving to Ottawa and it has been such a positive addition to my practice. I have been seeing some great results lately with patients with the use of shockwave therapy in stubborn injuries such as plantar fasciitis, tennis elbow and shoulder tendinopathy.

Curious to hear more about what shockwave is? Stay tuned! There’s a lot of info to share so I’ll save it for tomorrow’s post.

Happy snowy Wednesday!

Ok, let’s get back to basics. One of the most common questions I get asked is what is the cracking noise that happens when we perform a spinal adjustment or mobilization.

This phenomenon is similar to cracking your knuckles and doesn’t involve bones grinding or breaking. The sound is simply the gas escaping as the joint is momentarily stretched beyond its normal range of motion, creating a vacuum-like effect. Not every adjustment produces this sound, and its presence or absence doesn’t indicate the effectiveness of the adjustment. The adjustment itself aims to restore joint mobility, reduce stiffness, or alleviate pain by improving alignment and function.

Some chiropractors and patients associate the sound with a successful adjustment, but it’s not a requirement for therapeutic benefit. The noise is harmless and typically painless, though the sensation can feel surprising or intense- often in a good way. :)

When people see that I treat babies they often wonder if I’m adjusting them. The answer- sort of. While there are situations where chiros work on mobilizing some of the joints in baby’s spine, these mobilizations are far from the traditional “cracking” adjustments that we would do with an adult. There are no cracking noises, there is no twisting of the spine. We use just the pads of our fingers to gently mobilize the spine and the amount of pressure used is equal to the amount of force you would feel comfortable putting on your eyeball, very minimal. In fact, most babies sleep through it!

And while I do treat children and babies in my practice, the bulk of my pateints are fully grown humans ☺️

There are number of reasons why we would treat babies, but that’s a post for another day!

Chiropractic care during pregnancy 🤰

Chiropractic care offers numerous benefits for pregnant women, promoting comfort and health throughout pregnancy. As the body undergoes significant physical changes, such as weight gain and postural shifts, chiropractic adjustments can help alleviate common issues like lower back pain, sciatica, and pelvic discomfort. By ensuring proper spinal and pelvic alignment, chiropractors can enhance nervous system function, which may improve overall well-being and reduce stress on the body. Techniques like the Webster method can also support optimal fetal positioning, potentially easing labor and delivery. Additionally, chiropractic care is non-invasive and drug-free, making it a safe option for managing pregnancy-related discomfort while supporting a healthier pregnancy experience.

What is diastasis recti or DR?

Diastasis recti (DR): Diastasis recti or abdominal separation, is often present when a woman has pelvic floor dysfunction. DR occurs when the tissue that connects the abdominal muscles is stretched and pulled apart. This often occurs during pregnancy, and the left and right abdominals look and feel separated. A woman with DR can literally stick her fingers in between her abdominals and feel the separation. One sign that you may have a DR is presence of the "mummy tummy", which is a term used to describe when a woman still looks pregnant months after baby is born. The separation in the abdominals allows for increased bloating and a bulging belly. DR can also cause a great deal of instability in the core and lower back. So, it should not come as a surprise that another one of the symptoms is lower back pain.

Healing a DR is a big part of pelvic floor rehabilitation and healing your body after giving birth. Unchecked it can contribute to the development of a pelvic organ prolapse.

Don’t wait, book your rehab session today and get back to feeling strong 💪

Where is the pelvic floor and what do we mean when we speak of pelvic floor dysfunction ?

The pelvic floor is a hammock of muscles which support the pelvic organs (bladder, uterus and rectum/bowel). These muscles encircle the urethra, va**na and a**s. Dysfunction of the pelvic floor occurs when these muscles are over or under contracted, and both of these states can cause problems with urinary incontinence (peeing your pants when you cough, jump or sneeze, for example), f***l incontinence, painful in*******se, or pelvic organ prolapse.

Many women experience pelvic floor dysfunction and just disregard it as a typical part of aging or result of having had children. While pelvic floor dysfunction is a common result of those factors, it is also a very treatable condition with proper rehabilitation.

During our pelvic floor rehab rehabilitation sessions we spend time first learning how to engage the pelvic floor and then pairing that with effective exercises to help resolve the issue.
