As we close out 2025, we're reflecting on the milestones that shaped our journey—and looking ahead to an exciting future.

One of the research highlights in 2025 was the launch of a new app at Brightshores that modernizes the traditional call bell system patients use to ask for help. When a patient needs urgent assistance, nurses can see the priority right away and respond faster. The app was piloted in two of our inpatient units.

This project reflects our commitment to leading rural healthcare research – ensuring that innovation translates into the highest quality care for the communities we serve across Grey Bruce.

We recognize Be A Donor month every April to raise awareness for the importance of organ and tissue donations and encourage people to register to donate. Organ and tissue donation is a powerful legacy that gives others another chance at life.

“It is incredibly meaningful for our team to work with patients and families knowing the lives that are changed by the generosity of donors,” said Dr. Kseniya Troyan, Brightshores Hospital Donation Physician. “I encourage people in our community to consider registering their consent to donate if they haven’t already. Organ and tissue donations save and enhance lives of countless people.”

Every year we welcome medical students to Brightshores Health System for Discovery Week through the Rural Ontario Medical Program. Medical students experience a day in the life of a local healthcare provider and see what that looks like in our unique rural area.

Education opportunities like this help to support recruitment and showcases the training and support Brightshores provides to help healthcare professionals thrive – ultimately building a strong future for the patients and families we serve.

Time is brain, and every minute counts — In June we recognized stroke awareness month. Stroke education can help save lives all year round!

The District Stroke Centre for Grey and Bruce Counties is located at the Brightshores Owen Sound Hospital. We encourage you to learn the signs of stroke using the F.A.S.T. acronym:

• F – Face: Is it drooping?
• A – Arms: Can both arms be raised?
• S – Speech: Is it slurred or jumbled?
• T – Time: Call 911 immediately.

When stroke symptoms appear, call 911. Paramedics are trained to identify stroke, and by calling 911, they will respond and provide care while transporting patients directly to the stroke centre.

The Wellness & Recovery Centre is the first of its kind in Ontario. It fills a critical gap in response to the mental health and addiction crisis in our province — and it’s become a place of hope, healing and connection.

We celebrated the first full year of the centre being open in 2025 and reflected on the impact it has already had.

We are very proud of the team and their commitment to supporting meaningful change in the lives of individuals, families and communities across Grey Bruce.

“By supporting students on their path to a career in healthcare, we are helping to build a stronger, more inclusive system in Grey Bruce for generations to come.”
~ Rebecca Cummings, Vice President, People, Corporate Services, Chief Operating Officer

This past June, Brightshores introduced a new scholarship dedicated exclusively to Indigenous students pursuing post-secondary education in healthcare.

This initiative was made possible through our partnership with Medical Surgical & Safety Supplies (MSS Ltd) and their Giveback Program, which promotes prosperity and well-being among Indigenous Peoples.

When Karinna Wagenaar welcomed her daughter Eleanor into the world, she was profoundly touched by the compassionate and supportive care of her nurse, Amanda. So much so that she penned a heartfelt poem in Amanda’s honour — a tribute to the meaningful difference Amanda made in Karinna’s recovery journey from a C-section.
