Some good questions/inquiries about our upcoming Wholehearted Yoga-Informed Psychotherapy series (starting this Friday) prompted me to share a little more on the importance of first finding a sense of security and then practicing gently leaning into something difficult, WITHOUT diving into overwhelm.

There's still room for you to join us ❤️

Boundary work is one of the most common themes/goals of many when they come to therapy. Either because individuals have had very abrupt attacks on their boundaries and/or because of subtle, nuanced messaging in our childhood years that lacked the support to individuate or explore and communicate our preferences.

Setting boundaries is not just about learning conceptually 'how to', but yet working towards an embodied practice FEELING strong in our own preferences, actions and voice. The truth is, other people may not always like our boundaries. And for many of us, the idea of having boundaries feels at odds with risking connection (which in younger years can mean risking survival).

Coming into healthy relationship with our boundaries is first about knowing we deserve to connect with our preferences and then having a safe enough container to support us in our exploration of these preferences.

What does a ‘yes’ feel like in my body?
What does a ‘no’ feel like in my body?
What about neutral?

This is much more than just mentally weighing the pros and cons of something (which is still helpful information by the way-- just not the whole, embodied picture). Also, I often find that boundaries are misconceived as something that will take from a relationship, but they actually give us the opportunity to deepen in (healthy) relationship: not only with another but with ourselves.

Learning how to embody our boundaries can offer a release of tension within the mind and body (because the body no longer needs to hold the boundary as tight). This release of tension creates a spaciousness that allows us to connect with who we naturally are.

Exploring preferences and learning to embody boundaries is one of our themes woven throughout the upcoming round of Wholehearted Yoga held in Owen Sound, Ontario, starting March 24th.

You can send me a message if you'd like more information.

Wholeheartedly,
Diane
