Equitable dementia care starts with listening.

In her TEDx Talk, Ngozi Iroanyah, Director of Health Equity and Access at the Alzheimer Society of Ontario, shares her family’s 17-year journey with dementia — including the barriers they faced navigating a healthcare system that wasn’t designed with equity in mind.

Her story highlights how systemic inequities can shape families’ experiences with dementia care and why addressing them is essential. Equity in healthcare isn’t abstract. It’s deeply personal, and it starts with listening to lived experience.

Winter can make everyday life more challenging, especially for people living with dementia.

Colder weather, shorter days, and changes to routine can affect mood, energy, and overall well-being. Staying active and engaged still matters even in the winter months.

With a few thoughtful adjustments, families and care partners can help support comfort, safety, and connection throughout the season.

For those who observe, we wish you a peaceful Ramadan.

If you or someone you love is living with young onset dementia, this season can bring added emotional and practical challenges, alongside moments of connection and care.

Support doesn’t always have to come from dementia-specific programs. Family, faith communities, neighbourhood groups, and trusted networks can offer support during times of change.

If you’re looking for ideas or support options, we’ve shared guidance on finding community-based supports that may be helpful for you and your family.

Happy Lunar New Year! As we welcome the Year of the Horse, we want to take the opportunity to reflect on the future of our communities.

By 2050, almost one out of every four people who develop dementia in Canada will be of Asian origin. These projections highlight why understanding dementia trends, and preparing culturally responsive supports, is so important.

Family Day can look different when dementia is part of the picture.

For care partners, it’s often a day shaped by routines, responsibilities, and quiet acts of care, alongside little moments of connection that matter just as much.

Support makes a difference. Not just on Family Day, but every day families are navigating life with dementia. We’re here to help with information, guidance, and connection to services that support care partners and the people they care for.

We were so lucky to have Luna and her owner, Neil, join us for some dog snuggles and pets. Luna brought smiles and laughter to everyone as she toured the room. Pet therapy releases "feel good" hormones, which were evident in the group. Thanks, Luna and Neil 🐾🐾

Today is the International Day of Women and Girls in Science - a day to recognize the contributions women make to research and innovation in dementia research.

Through the Alzheimer Society Research Program, we support researchers across Canada who are working to change the future of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. In 2025, over $5.1 million was awarded to 37 researchers nationally, many of them women leading important dementia research.

Research shows Black individuals are more likely to develop dementia and are often diagnosed at a later stage of the disease. These outcomes aren’t driven by biology. They’re shaped by social determinants of health, including income, education, neighbourhood environments, chronic stress, and the impacts of racial discrimination.

Understanding how these factors influence dementia risk and access to care is essential to building a system that supports all families equitably.

- What kinds of memory changes should you expect as you grow older?
- Which changes are normal and which ones are not?
- If I forget, is something wrong with my brain?
