The last few weeks of summer the kids were itching to get back to school, and now that they're back in class they're just ...itching.
Time to start checking for headlice! Comb through your child's hair with a fine toothed comb, paying special attention behind the ears. The louse itself is a small light brown critter with 3 pairs of legs but they move fast! They leave little nits/eggs glued to the hair shaft about 1cm from the scalp. Once you see one they're pretty easy to recognize.
No lice found, but you know it's in your kid's classroom? Tie back long hair as much as possible, braids are great. Remind kids not to share headphones, hats, brushes, scrunchies etc and avoid head-to-head contact.
Found some? Effective treatments include Nix (insecticide) and NYDA (noninsecticidal). We generally tend to recommend the NYDA over the Nix as there's less risk of resistance, but there's pros and cons to each. $$COST$$: Nix and NYDA are covered by OHIP+ with a prescription! Call your doctor's office or ask for a prescription to have handy when you see your prescriber next.
After treatment, comb out the dead lice and try to get as many nits/eggs out as possible. No treatment will kill ALL the nits/eggs so they need to be retreated after 7-10 days. Wash anything that comes in contact with the hair (sheets, towels, hats, etc) but lice don't live long off of the scalp so you don't need to clean more than you usually do. Things that can't be washed (their favourite stuffy) can be stored in a plastic garbage bag for 2 weeks. You do NOT need to treat others in the household unless they also have evidence of lice.
What about tea tree oil or coconut oil? In ADDITION to a proven effective treatment (see above), sure. But these cannot be relied upon on their own.
Do you feel itchy now after reading all that? Me too! Creepy crawlies give us all the ick but let's remember that lice are NOT a sign of poor hygiene and they squirm their way into every household at one point or another - it is NOT a shameful thing, it's just another thing we all deal with in life. As if there isn't enough, these days!
