To utilize Hypnotherapy as a tool for nervous system regulation, is to utilize it in such a way that our main focus becomes how it feels in your body to experience the thing you are moving towards.
Whether that is to experience less stress, less anxiety and more peace, overall, it can be challenging moving towards those things if our main somatic response is fear-based.
At the core of any healing work, is the desire for a person to simply feel safe within their body and the experiences happening there. However, human’s typically feel safest with what they are familiar with - so if anxiety is a typical response to everyday life, that is a predictable sensation in their body.
When clients come to me for Hypnotherapy and tell me they want to experience more calmness in their lives, one of the first questions I ask them is if they are familiar with that feeling. Almost instantly, you can see their body responding to the idea of calmness as if they are being chased by a lion.
Why? Because their nervous system isn’t used to it- and what your nervous system isn’t used to, can be perceived as a threat. Which I understand sounds counterintuitive, but consider it yourself. What goals do you have for your own wellness? What does it feel like in your body to consider moving towards those goals?
In my Hypnotherapy practice, our focus will be on uncovering as many neutral associations with your goal as we can, and using hypnosis in a therapeutic capacity in order for you to FEEL what it feels like in your body. This essentially be a practice in regulating the nervous system so that it becomes acquainted with the emotions you strive to experience.
Some call this reprogramming your mind to build new associations, but I like to see this as coming into union with your mind through your body to REMEMBER what it feels like to feel calm, safe and relaxed. Until those things become a natural state- because they are.
