An Overview

Feet are complex structures crucial for balance, movement, and bearing weight, containing 26 bones, 33 joints, and numerous muscles, tendons, and ligaments. They also have a high concentration of nerve endings and sweat glands.

Anatomy:
* Each foot contains 26 bones, 33 joints, and over 100 muscles, tendons, and ligaments.
* The bones in the foot are mostly cartilage at birth and harden as the foot grows, becoming fully ossified around age 21.
* There are more nerve endings per square centimeter in the foot than any other part of the body.
* The soles of our feet contain more sweat glands and nerve endings per square inch than any other body part.
Function:
* The foot is a complex mechanical structure that allows for locomotion and transmits force.
* The foot's structure, including the arches, helps with shock absorption and balance.
* Feet constantly supply information about the surface we walk on, such as whether it's hot, cold, rough, or smooth.
Foot Health:
* Common foot problems include bunions, hammertoes, plantar fasciitis, and ingrown toenails.
* Poorly fitting shoes can contribute to foot problems like corns, calluses, and hammertoes.
* Conditions like diabetes and poor circulation can affect foot health and lead to cold feet or nerve damage.
* Keeping your feet healthy is important for overall health and well-being.
Interesting Facts:
* The average person walks around 7500 steps per day, which is equivalent to around 5 laps of the Earth's equator in a person's lifetime.
* There are some differences between the left and right foot morphology, as no two feet are the same.

When buying shoes, it is always a good idea to buy them late in the day, when your feet are tired and may be slightly swollen. In this way, you are unlikely to buy shoes that are too small.

Tips to help you avoid fungal infections:

1. Keep your feet covered in public places. Gyms, community pools, nail salons, and seaside restrooms and changing areas all see a heavy amount of barefoot traffic. Wearing flip flops or shower shoes will prevent your feet from coming in contact with surfaces where the fungi have been deposited.
2. Wash your feet daily and dry completely. This simple act will go a long way to keeping fungal and other infections away. Take extra care to dry between your toes as this is where athlete’s foot most often starts.
3. Make sure socks stay dry. Fungi love dark, moist places—that’s why the inside of your socks and shoes are the perfect breeding ground. If your feet tend to perspire profusely, keep an extra pair of socks with you and change as soon as you notice your feet feel damp.
Use foot powder. A dusting of an anti-fungal or talcum powder will aid in keeping feet dry throughout the day.
4. Don’t share items that touch another person’s feet. Socks, shoes, nail files, clippers, and even towels can be a vehicle to pass on a fungal infection.
5. Choose shoes made of breathable materials. This will allow for air circulation around your feet and reduce the amount of moisture trapped in your shoes.
6. Alternate your shoes. It’s helpful to allow shoes to air out for a day or two between wearings.
