Health care is for everyone.

Not just the easy cases.
Not just the typical patient.
Everyone.

Next month, we celebrate 3 years since opening our accessible oral health clinic.

Three years of learning.
Three years of listening.
Three years of intentionally building care differently.

Because accessibility shouldn’t be an afterthought—it should be where care begins.

This Oral Health Month, we’re sharing real stories and real experiences to show what accessible care truly looks like—and why it matters.

We know we’re only one part of a much bigger system.
But we are committed to doing our part to make oral health care more accessible—for everyone.

Follow along this week as we share Jonathan’s experience.

For many neurodivergent individuals, the hardest part isn’t the care —
it’s the pace, the noise, the unpredictability.

We slow things down.

We explain each step.
We allow time to process.
We adjust the environment so the visit feels more manageable.

If you’d like to know exactly what to expect before coming in,
I’ve created a simple guide that walks you through it.

Comment MORE and I’ll send it to you.

It’s National Dental Hygiene Week—a time to celebrate the incredible role dental hygienists play in health care.

Most people still think dental hygiene is “just cleaning teeth.” But it’s so much more. Dental hygienists are prevention specialists, working to protect not just your smile, but your overall health and wellbeing.

From clinics to hospitals, long-term care, and homes, we assess health histories, support patients during treatment, educate caregivers, write care plans, and ensure safety through meticulous sterilization. Every step is about protecting health, function, and dignity. That means preventing disease before it starts.

Oral health is connected to heart health, nutrition, frailty, and even cognitive wellbeing. When we focus on prevention, dentistry becomes a critical part of primary health care, not just treatment.

This week, we celebrate the expertise, attention, and care dental hygienists bring to every person’s health—because our work goes far beyond teeth.

Oral health is more than a smile! The mouth is not separate from the body…its condition affects the body as a whole. You can’t be healthy without a healthy mouth!

You used to take her every 6 months.

She sat in the chair.
She understood what was happening.

Now it’s difficult to get her to the car.
She is overwhelmed before we arrive.
She turns her head away.
She pushes your hand.
She says no.

So you stop trying.
Not because you don’t care.
Because you don’t want to distress her.

This is the moment families call us.
We slow everything down.
We meet her where she is.
We protect her comfort, dignity, and health.

There is another way. We can help!

Today, we honour our clients who are cancer survivors.

Cancer is not just a diagnosis, it’s a journey filled with treatments, emotions, side effects, and constant adjustments. What many people don’t realize is that all cancer treatments impact the mouth. Changes in saliva, increased risk of infection, pain, and oral disease can become part of an already heavy load.

That’s where our work comes in.
We walk alongside our clients to minimize oral symptoms, protect their oral health, and prevent further disease, so one more thing doesn’t have to feel overwhelming.

Darlene came to us through the cancer clinic. She is a fighter and has terminal cancer.
Today, we celebrate her strength, her resilience, and her wins — and the many others like her who continue to fight, heal, and move forward.

On World Cancer Day, we stand with survivors, patients, caregivers, and healthcare teams.
Because oral health is part of cancer care — and every win matters.

Caregiving isn’t easy — but small actions make a huge difference.

Observe changes, communicate openly with your care team, give time and space, and always protect dignity.

Follow us for practical tips and support to make caregiving safer, calmer, and more respectful — for both you and the person you care for.

As people age or as medical conditions or disabilities progress, oral health needs can change. This can happen slowly, or sometimes unexpectedly. What worked six months ago may not work today.

That’s why our care is more than the appointment itself.
We pay attention to subtle changes, adjust treatment and care plans as needed, and we communicate our observations to the people supporting our client day to day.

Caregivers play a vital role.
They notice routines, challenges, and behaviours that affect their loved ones care—they deserve support too.

Our goal is always the same:
to meet each person where they are, involve their caregivers in a respectful way, and protect what matters most—comfort, independence, and dignity.

We care for people whose lives changed suddenly — stroke, heart attack, cancer — and who can no longer access traditional dental care.

In long-term care, oral health needs don’t decrease… they increase.
Swallowing becomes unsafe.
Holding a toothbrush becomes difficult.
And mouth care often gets missed.

When oral health isn’t prioritized, disease develops quickly — and it affects comfort, dignity, and overall health.

That’s why we bring care to the bedside.
We support residents, train staff, and guide families with simple, safe ways to reduce risk and improve quality of life

Oral health still matters.
Especially in long-term care.

I meet so many people who are doing everything they can to manage chronic illness — and no one ever explained how much their mouth is affected along the way.

This isn’t about blame.
It’s about understanding risk and supporting the body as a whole.

Oral health is health care.
And it deserves the same attention as the rest of the body. We can help!

Most people think a dental hygienist just cleans teeth.
But that’s actually the smallest part of what we do.

If all you needed were clean teeth, you wouldn’t need a trained clinician.
A toothbrush cleans — a dental hygienist assesses and monitors.

We assess your entire mouth, your health history, and risk factors.
We diagnose what’s happening now and what could become a problem later.
We plan care that’s specific to you — not a one-size-fits-all approach.
We implement prevention, treatment, and education to protect your health.
And we evaluate over time, adjusting as your needs change.

Your dental hygienist explains why problems happen,
how to prevent them,
and what your mouth needs to stay healthy long-term.

You don’t just leave with clean teeth —
you leave with a personalized aftercare plan,
ongoing monitoring, prevention strategies,
and support that continues beyond today’s visit.

Cleaning is a moment.
Oral health is a strategy.
