Weâre proud to celebrate Kayla on receiving the Faculty of Medicine Graduate Scholarship! đ
Kayla is an Autistic service provider at Mindful Matters, and her research focuses on the experiences of Autistic young adultsâparticularly those diagnosed later in life or who self-identify. Her work centers lived experience and aims to improve more inclusive, neurodivergent-affirming health services and supports.
Congratulations, Kayla, on this incredible achievement. Weâre excited to see the impact of your work!Â
Here is Kayla's message:
Iâm incredibly excited and honoured to share that Iâve been awarded the Faculty of Medicine Graduate Scholarship! â¨
This scholarship prioritizes research focused on autism, and Iâm so grateful to have my work recognized in this area that is both personally and professionally meaningful to me.
My research centers on understanding how Autistic young adultsâespecially those diagnosed later in life or who self-identify without a formal diagnosisâexperience identity development, well-being, and access to supports. By centering lived experience, I hope to contribute to more inclusive, neurodivergent-affirming health services, clinical practices, and policies.
As both an occupational therapist and a late-diagnosed Autistic adult, this work is deeply personal. Iâm passionate about amplifying voices that have historically been underrepresented in autism research and helping bridge gaps in support for Autistic adults.
I also want to share how meaningful it is to do this work as an Autistic service provider. Iâm proud to be part of a community and workplace that values lived experience and encourages growth. đ
Thank you to everyone who has supported me along the wayâthis is just the beginning!
