The window of tolerance describes the emotional zone where you feel balanced, present, and able to cope with daily stressors. In this zone, you may still feel pressure or challenge, but you’re grounded, steady, and able to manage life from a place of clarity.
When you move into hyperarousal, you may feel overwhelmed, anxious, reactive, or “amped up.” When you move into hypoarousal, you may feel shut down, numb, disconnected, or fatigued.
Stress and trauma can gradually shrink this window, making it easier to become dysregulated and harder to return to equilibrium.
Therapy can help expand your window of tolerance by providing tools for nervous system regulation, offering a safe space to process trauma, and helping you reconnect with your grounded state when you move outside your window.
Amanda Graff is a polyvagal-theory-trained, nervous-system-informed therapist at Cobblestone who can support you in this work.
