I have been working with people who are living with early-onset Alzheimer's Disease for many years, as an exercise specialist. More recently I have begun to add drums and other percussion instruments into my routines, and the results have been wonderful. Creating music as a group has created a sense of "togetherness" difficult to achieve through other means. I see the joy in their faces and their movements, and in their words as they are leaving. I truly feel blessed to work with these incredible people...

Incredible people like Mickey Hart (drummer from the Grateful Dead) are continuing to connect the dots and highlight the influence that rhythm plays on the brain...

"Rhythm and vibrations are the basis of all life," Hart explains."The brain is rhythm central. It tells us what to do and what not to do, and it all has to do with interacting rhythms. Each part of the brain is putting out pulses that interact with your whole body. I'm a rhythmist, so I'm interested in the sound of the brain. I want to know how to control rhythm and use it as an interactive sound tool. And now I can hear my brain waves and see them in real time using this contraption that I put on my head which reads what my brain waves are doing and then makes sound out of them. This becomes music. This is my brain on rhythm."

"When the rhythm is right you feel it with all your senses; it's in your mind, in your body, in both places. The head of the drum vibrates as you strike it. A feeling not unlike trust settles over you as give yourself to the rhythm. You don't fight it, but instead allow yourself to be propelled by the insistent but friendly feeling. All sense of the present moment disappears, the normal categories of time become meaningless...

Music is medicine...

Have you ever found yourself tapping your hands or feet along to a song? I certainly have - probably several times a day. We move to rhythm - and rhythm moves us. Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart says “Rhythm is connection,”. “It’s everything. It’s life.”

He’s right. It’s also healing; studies have found that drumming reduces tension, anxiety and stress, helps control chronic pain, boosts the immune system, releases negative feelings, blockages and emotional trauma. Sounds pretty good, doesn’t it?

So what’s stopping you? Probably the same thing that stops most people - they just don’t know where to start. FIND YOUR RHYTHM is a dedicated, on-going rhythm class that supports your efforts in a fun, non-threatening environment. It doesn’t matter if you don’t “get it” right away. The skills can be built over time with patience and persistence.

This is a brand-new endeavor started by local musician/exercise specialist Doug Pickard, and he plans on expanding far beyond its current reach.
