In this newsletter

I share a story from just after the holidays of bringing one of my Mom's dearest friends to hear the big band my husband plays in the Oceanside Big Band with special guest Zachary Stevenson. We paused. We connected and took time to be. And enjoyed great music.

Recipe of the month: Glazed Lentil Walnut Apple Loaf by Oh She Glows

https://ohsheglows.com/glazed-lentil-walnut-apple-loaf-revisited/

Three books I am revisiting:

Essentialism and Effortless, by Greg McKeown and How to Do the Inner Work by Susanne Madsen

What if we started looking at the ways we can do less?

As Greg McKeown shares in Effortless

"Do not do more today than you can completely recover from today. Do not do more this week than you can completely recover from this week."

Doing less and paying attention to our energy and our capacity helps us connect with ourselves and others.

I do not usually talk about the Chinese New Year. As this is the year of the horse, shared a photo of two horses that I took on our 6 week road trip a few years ago.

We were at a ranch, I saw these two horses in the field. The beautiful piece was initially they were separated, as I walked closer, they walked to each other, as if to say hello my friend.

My hope for 2026 is we find those beautiful ways to come together, share and help to lift one another.

Hope you enjoy these thoughts from How to Do the Inner Work and Effortless.

How do you prep for your week?

One of my favourite ways is to have a healthier loaf to add to my breakfast or or enjoy with my morning or afternoon tea.

I created this recipe for Sweet Potato Apple Nut Bread several years ago and this will also be featured in the new cookbook I am creating - Our Favourite Things - Collection of Gluten Free Goodies.

This is gluten free and includes, nuts and seeds and is sweetened with Yams and Apples. I love to include the spices from Gathering Place Trading here on Vancouver Island.

Recipe is available on our website:

What is your weekend ritual?

For us that is Pancakes. I started creating this recipe when I was going to the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition in Vancouver.

The beauty of these pancakes is they are gluten free, have healthy omegas, have no added sugar and are sweetened with apples and maple syrup.

And yes, Shelby is part of the quality control team and enjoys the first one.

These freeze really well, and a great option for breakfast on a busy morning. And yes those are frozen blueberries that I found at our local market this summer.

Frozen is just as good as fresh. Just need a little extra time for them to warm up to room temperature.

Recipe:

Ingredients:
● 3 Eggs
● 2 tsp Baking Powder
● 1 tsp Arrow Root Starch
● 1/3 cup Maple Syrup
● 1 diced apple
● 1/2 cup Gluten Free Flour
● 1/2 cup Almond Flour
● 1/3 cup Olive Oil
● 1 cup Non-Dairy Milk
● 1 tbsp Chia Seeds
● 2 tbsp Ground Flax seeds

*to make this plant based, do not add the eggs.

Directions:
1. Mix Chia seeds and ground flax in 1/2 cup of water. Let sit for 20 minutes
2. Mix all dry ingredients in one bowl.
3. Add all wet ingredients.
4. Mix together
5. Scoop onto a warm cast-iron fry pan until you see bubbles in the centre of the pancake. Flip pancake and cook for a few minutes.
6. Keep pancakes warm in the oven.
7. Serve with fresh or frozen fruit, sprinkled with H**p Hearts and enjoy with organic Maple Syrup.

Sharing our Holiday Newsletter - Creating Space to Listen.

Link to the newsletter: https://mailchi.mp/13c6eb03c64b/creatingspacetolisten

In this newsletter I talk about:

1. The importance of creating more space to listen. Not to respond, fix or share advice, only to listen.

2. One of the first recipes I created Nourishing Oatmeal Cranberry Cookies. These are sweetened with Apples.

3. Wonderful workshop that the talented Anne Dunnett and friends are delivering "In the Heart of Winter: A Solstice Gathering on Sunday, December 21st. This workshop will continue on the theme of the 7 Types of Rest. This is the link to register https://everydayhaiku.ca/winter-solstice-gathering

4. The book I am currently reading You and We - A Relational Rethinking of Work, Life and Leadership written by Jim Ferrell. Thank you to Michelle Linford for recommending this book. This is a book that is so rich, I will be returning to this.

And a beautiful thought by Janice Marturano, author of Finding the Space to Lead, for the holidays.

I share the importance of being kind. So many are navigating so much. Many are just trying to breathe. Let us give each other grace and create space for others to share their story, where we listen.

May the gifts of the season touch your heart and bring you great joy!

Merry Christmas! All the best this holiday season.

In this newsletter I talked about the importance of creating space for creative rest. There are so many ways we can be creative. It is important we learn to give ourselves permission to rest.

A true joy to attend the event hosted by Maturn "Leading Through Change: Building Menopause Inclusive Workplaces at the beautiful Terminal City Club, in Vancouver.

Thank you Jen Murtagh, ACC, CLC Sonja Baikogli Foley and everyone with Maturn and all the sponsors who made this event possible. We need more conversations like this to learn from each other.

This luncheon meeting was so rich in connection and sharing I neglected to take any photos.

The Panel Discussion was excellent.

A few take aways:

Be an advocate. This is not easy. Be your own advocate.

Build Your Team.

We need men to be part of this conversation.

Lori Brotto talked about the many highlights from the McKinsey Report; https://www.mckinsey.com/mhi/our-insights/blueprint-to-close-the-womens-health-gap-how-to-improve-lives-and-economies-for-all

Look for the ways we can support each other. As women we are so much stronger when we lift each other.

It was such a gift to see Nicky Dhaliwal-Sidhu and Kenton Boston with the Canadian Men's Health Foundation. We need men to be part of leading this change.

At our table we had a wonderful conversation and talked about:

Move as you are able

Find those ways to get out of our head. Loved the reframe of "change the channel." Go for walk. Switch to something different. The anxiety and brain fog is real.

The importance of creating greater flexibility in our workplaces.

Increase the amounts in our Benefits Packages for Naturopathic Doctors and other Holistic Practitioners.

Create and share more resources that each of us have found helpful.

We need a community to support and learn from each other.

Encourage men to share what their partners have experienced and what has been helpful.

And so much more,

We also shared some of the work and resources of several amazing women do great work:

Dr. Bal Pawa, Integrative Health Expert with the Westcoast Women's Clinic and author of The Mind-Body Cure: Heal Your Pain, Anxiety, and Fatigue by Controlling Chronic Stress

Dr Jerilyn Prior Professor of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, BC. author of Estrogen’s Storm Season: Stories of Perimenopause

Lisa Mosconi and her books XX Brain and The Menopause Brain.

Beautiful conversation with Connie Pretula CNP on the role of nutrition in helping us navigate our way forward.

Thank you Jen and Sonja for this great event and the beautiful flowers that were shared at each table.

Grateful for today and the richness of these important conversations.

What if we built longer transition time between everything we do?

Last week I had a meeting a little further away from my home. I reached out to a friend and also scheduled a walk in nature.

I scheduled additional time for the walk, along with more space to pause, longer transition time and travel time.

It was such a gift to enjoy the walk and not feel rushed and be nourished by the gifts of nature. This also created space to enjoy a visit with my son. The beautiful thing was I arrived at my meeting, even with a few traffic challenges early. I was relaxed and present.

What if we did more of this?

Lets create longer transition time between everything we do.

This is part of how we create more harmony in our lives, where work is one part.

"In creating harmony we find new ways to blend the melodic rhythym in the dance of life."

What choices will you make and schedule in your calendar?

Over the past week or so I have attended several events where the topic of work-life balance has come up. I do not believe work-life balance is possible, as how can there ever be any balance if work is always number one?

What I do believe what is possible is finding those ways to harmonize all the parts of our lives, where work is one part. And, by creating harmony, which includes having boundaries in alignment with our values and purpose, we can have richly rewarding professional lives that do not come at the cost of living.

I wrote this piece more than a decade ago talking about "Moving from Work Life Balance to Harmonizing Life." https://www.nourishedexecutive.ca/moving-from-work-life-balance-to-harmonizing-life/

Wonderful to see others speaking about the importance of discovering those ways for greater work life harmony.

What are your thoughts?

Do you strive to find those ways to blend the melodic rhythm in the dance of life, where work is one part?

Sharing gratitude, especially when our lives do not go as planned.

Expressing gratitude to Cindy Spratt for the work she does and also sharing one of her recipes for Easy Chewy Granola Bars.

And, the recent book I read by Daniel Levitin "I Heard There Was a Secret Chord". Such a great book. I loved this thought:

"Engaging with music activates the parasympathetic nervous system, promoting relaxation and lowering heart rate blood pressure and cortisol levels hormones related to stress. Music can also serve as a distraction and engage cognitive processes."

Over the past few weeks as so many memories are shared about Robert Redford, I discovered this one.

I have been surprized how much his passing has saddened me. I am incredibly grateful by all the great work he did, along with inspiring each of us to use our talents to help lift others.

Imagine the seeds that we can plant, and how these blossoms will help to inspire to others.
