I'd like to take a moment to reach out to the Healthcare and deathcare industry. 🫧
As someone married to a Healthcare worker and being a Death Doula and grief coach myself we see both sides of the industries. And we have some thoughts.
Recently as I have been planning a workshop for Will and End-of-life planning, I recieved a lot of push back from the Healthcare and deathcare community.
Death Doulas are an up and coming position in the deathcare and Healthcare community, and we're here to help both those planning or going through End-of-life and those that care for them on all levels. As an end-of-life/death doula we are there to help with the already overloaded system, help to be a presence and support for Healthcare workers, families/loved ones and the dieing.
As doulas we help guide end-of-life planning, help with grief resources and be a support. As the overloaded system is only going to become more burdened I asked that those of us with these positions give one another grace and opportunity to help in places where the industries are spread thin.
The world as it is already is scary and angry, holding on to ideals of whos right or whos wrong is not going to help the issues we face.
We are in positions where compassion is first. So let's have compassion for one another and the strengths we bring to the industries.

Take time to slow down today🫧
In grief its important to slow down, life passes us by so fast that when a death happens that wheel keeps spinning.
Take a moment to breathe, reflect on your feelings and calm yourself.
Be gentle with yourself, there is no rush to move through your grief.

Finding yourself in grief 🫧
When we have a loved one pass a lot of times we can lose who we are. Our identities, our perspective and our focus, all can be muddy when grief has a hold on us.
Know that this is life's reset. Our identity changes throughout our lives and when we lose someone that was a large part of who we are it gives us a pivot.
New chapters are scary but part life and death.
Take it a day at a time. Small goals of new change.

Love and memories transcend🫧
With the death of a loved one we can feel lonely and lost.
These feelings are big and can make us tender. Be gentle with yourself, reach out for support.
For those of us supporting the grieving remember to check in, be a presence.
We can find our loved ones in every space in our lives, celebrate the memories, take every moment the thought of them comes up and feel. In our hearts they still live with us.
It's ok to have sad days, missing the dead is normal.
Give yourself grave to grieve at all times.

Cemeteries aren't scary ❤️
Despite the dramatic backdrop a cemetary can create for a good spooky story, cemeteries aren't scary.
Many graveyards and cemeteries are beautiful, with art work and carefully selected memoriums, mausoleums, headstones and traditional grave site markers. These are places where the grounds are kept and the atmosphere is reverent.
Gardens like these in Cedar, BC. are a great example of a place to rest our loved ones among the trees, the pond, and the grounds.

Did you take a moment today?🫧
Life can pull us in all sorts of directions, we can forget to take a moment to breathe. In these still moments we have the opportunity to hear ourselves both physically and mentally, and for a lot of us spiritually.
Take a moment to connect with yourself, especially in times of grief. ❤️

They're gone, now what?🫧
After the passing of our loved ones we can feel lost, hollow, and stripped of identity. My best advice is to find comfort in your beliefs, what warms your heart when you think of the next plane?
For many, the thought of an "afterlife" is comfort, but for many more the fear of the unknown is immobilising, the not knowing is scary! However, the best part is there is no right or wrong answer to your beliefs.
The loss of someone can cause a lot of questions against our faiths or strengthen them, don't feel guilty when these questions come up, being the seeker will empower you to find your answers.
Know that your loved one is always with you❤️
The things we believe in should never be a border between loved ones, respecting one another's beliefs is part of the support we can give and should be part of the grace we give one another as humans.
So no matter the line you walk, remember there are others with different faiths, longer or shorter paths and a horizon all their own.
As a death doula I welcome all denominations and faiths, learning about the beliefs of others is part of the being in the death community 🫧

The death of an estranged parent🫧
As some of us have made a life of no contact for our own reasons with our parents their deaths can still affect us incredibly.
A lot of the time these parents don't take responsibility for the damage they have done, the pain they have caused and poor choices they have made.
Forgiveness is granted by few of us with the hopes that we can move on from the pain. We grieve relationships with our parents the whole time we are not talking, the dreams of the parental role that was always craved are shattered constantly by the disappointment of the things our estranged parent does or says.
My mom was very public about loving her kids, yet her actions and words reflected differently. It was not planned that I sat with my mom whom I had been estranged with for many years as she was actively dying, do I regret it, no, not per say. We didn't talk much as she couldn't but the feeling of regret from her was strong, and yet she probably still would have blamed me.
It was a very emotionally confusing time as she was passing, I mourned in my own way. I mourned the could haves and the grief of never having the opportunity to have a good relationship with her.
Children that go no contact are not doing it because its a trend, they are doing it to protect themselves, to rest from the role their parents wanted them to play and to feel freedom in being who they really are.
Navigating the death of an estranged parent is not easy, but there is a way through❤️

The 7 languages of sorrow🫧
Am I the mover and the shaker?
When you're upset or excited do you feel it in your body like a building of energy?
The movers and the shakers have a need to express energy to mourn and to express.
Jogging off some sadness, lifting weights to clear your head, dancing to feel free of hard emotions, all these ways we can help our physical grievers to ground and let out their big feelings.

The 7 langauges of sorrow🫧
Am I the artist?
Human beings have been expressing themselves through art since we learned rhythm.
Dancing, songs, painting, Fibre art, sculpting, there are so many ways in which we can express ourselves.
Expressing our grief through creation is a powerful way to honor not only the ones we lost but also our grief.

Life doesn't pause for grief 🫧
As we move through the complicated sand and waters of grief life can pass us by, normal is no longer normal.
In this time of navigating a new way of living without the loved one, be gentle with yourself. Change is hard, but change can be good.
Honouring our loved ones that have passed, talking about them, celebrating their memory, spending our time with the ones we love and loved them.
Time means memories 💕

The 7 languages of sorrow🫧
Am I the talker?
Are silences hard? Does talking about how you feel help? This is a langauge of sorrow, the choice to be heard.
For some talking out their feelings and sharing their stories help to heal them.
Having a voice in grief is very important, repressing your voice can lead to deep depression and also physical ailment.
Our truths are so important, surrounding yourself with supportive people that listen and are a presence will help with the talkative griever.
