🌱 Grow communication skills!

📌Create opportunities for your child to tell you their wants, needs, and thoughts.

Here’s how it works…

Step One: Create an opportunity to communicate.

Step Two: Wait and give your child time to initiate communication.

Step Three: Acknowledge their communication and respond accordingly.

Step Four: Help them expand their communication by modeling gestures, words, and phrases to match their message.

🎗️Remember to mix it up and try some different approaches for creating these opportunities.

👇 Here are some examples of how to create opportunities for your child to tell you their wants, needs, and thoughts:

✔️ Make items inaccessible by placing a favorite item high on a shelf or in a container your child can’t open.
✔️ Give your child a choice of two books to read.
✔️ Create a silly problem by giving your child yogurt but no spoon.
✔️ Do something unexpected like pretending to fall asleep and snore.
✔️ Practice in daily routines when your child knows what to expect. Wait at the back door before opening the door to go outside. Pause before you hand them their cup of milk. See how they communicate what should come next.

Tell me in the comments-
Which is your favorite way to create the important opportunities to communicate??

Sometimes a small shift in how you are communicating with your child can have a huge impact on how they are communicating with you. Consider using these types of comments to help reduce the number of questions you are asking.

School is starting (or has started) for many this month. 🍎🍏🍎

What can you do as a teacher, speech language pathologist, professional or parent?

We all have our plates full. If you can dive deep into understanding gestalt language processing and echolalia this year, great! If you can’t that’s ok too.

The most important thing we need to convey to anyone interacting with a child that scripts is that it IS communication so please acknowledge the script. It doesn’t matter if it’s in or seemingly out of context. It doesn’t matter if you can or can’t understand it. Just smile, head nod or repeat it back. Our kids deserve to be heard and replied to and not ignored or redirected or forced to say something else.

If you want to take it a step further then look into that script. What does it mean? Sometimes it is not literal and has a much different meaning than the words used. Sometimes it’s communicating something about the body (dysregulation) or an emotion (happiness).

Wishing everyone a great start to the 2022-23 school year!

We love play! 🙌🏻 It’s natural, it’s engaging, and parents can use similar activities at home to create meaningful language opportunities.

Did you know there are 2 ways for children to develop language? I am now an NLA Trained Clinician, which means I'm educated in supporting children who are gestalt language processors. If your child communicates using delayed echolalia (scripting), I am trained to support their language development using an approach that matches their gestalt language learning. Check out the post below - Alex at Meaningful Speech is a great resource for parent friendly information :)
