Did you know you can plan for your celebration of life, or cremation and burial in advance? We know most folks don't enjoy talking about death, much less planning for it, though it is a true gift to your loved ones when you plan ahead. Our Advanced Planning Director, Lee, hosts complimentary seminars in the community where he shares about the planning process and estate settlement.

~ HOLIDAY GRIEF ~

When someone you love passes away, the holidays can be a very tough time of year. Even if you feel like you have made progress in your grief, the holidays present a time of ‘firsts’ -

The first time you realize they are not on your gift list, the first time you decorate the tree without them, or the first time you are responsible for cooking or carving the family turkey. These occasions, and so many more, can make the pain of grief come flooding back, and you may feel as though you have made no progress at all.

While we cannot eliminate this pain, nor do we recommend trying to do so, we would like to offer a few tips to help work through these feelings.

Firstly, take a moment to acknowledge that the holidays will be different and accept that it is okay to feel upset about that. Think about what changes you will need to make to your holiday traditions in advance, and who in your circle can fill some of the ‘jobs’ your loved one took care of. It's important to ask for help and support.

Lastly, create a new tradition in memory of your loved one. By taking the time to remember and celebrate their life, their memory will live on.

Holiday grief looks like
A shining smile around others
discarded at the door
The moment you’re alone,
Followed by tears
That finally allow
The ache to spill out
A pain the likes of which
you’ve never known.

Holiday grief looks like
making Christmas lists
To choose thoughtful gifts
Amidst the disappointment
Of the unanswered “why”?
For the present you can’t give
And the presence you can’t receive
Since that shattering “goodbye”.

Holiday grief looks like
Avoiding certain aisles
Or sobbing at the
Farmers market.
Because you feel them there
And everywhere
And don’t always know
How their loss will greet you
Or where to expect it.

Holiday grief looks like
Singing favorite Christmas songs
But pressing pause on the ones
That hurt too much to hear.
It’s deciding which traditions
To continue on
And which ones can wait until you feel
More up to it another year.

Holiday grief looks like
Decreased bandwidth
And increased irritability,
Questions of “where did that come from?”
And “since when do I feel so angry?”

Holiday grief looks like
Calendars that are full
But a heart both full and empty.
The fight against
The “shoulds” and the expectations
And the desire to honor
Rest and healthy boundaries.

Holiday grief looks like
Shifting roles and
Changing chapters,
Altered landscapes
And acknowledging
the “before” and the “after”

Holiday grief looks like
Unexpected laughs
At a core memory revisited,
So strong in this moment
Their presence so vivid
Their memory
Filling the room and filling your heart
Along with it.

Holiday grief looks like
“They would have loved that”
Or “remember when?”
Reflective and relieved
That you’re able to reminisce
And be filled with joy
At the sound of their name again.

Holiday grief looks like
Sentimental gifts on display,
A thread that connects
Who you were back then
Because of them
To who their love continues
To help make you today.

Holiday grief looks like
A sea of swirling snowflakes
In the landscape of loss,
No two quite the same
With flurrying feelings
And complicated emotions
You can’t quite shake and
You can’t quite name.

Holiday grief will look like
so many things,
A result of navigating
immense love and immense loss
And the pain that tension brings.
But no matter how it looks
This holiday
Please allow it to be seen,
To be given space
Because it’s such a kindness
To ourselves and one another
When we do not look away.
