Weekly Herb Spotlight: Elderberry (Sambucus)

As the air turns crisp, one of my favorite seasonal allies is Elderberry. These tiny, dark berries are rich in vitamin C, antioxidants, and flavonoids — a true powerhouse for supporting the immune system during cold and flu season.

For centuries, elderberries have been used in folk remedies, often associated with protection, transformation, and healing. Beyond their symbolism, they’re practical too — and in my home, elderberry syrup has become a seasonal ritual that keeps us feeling strong year after year.

🍯 Simple Elderberry Syrup Recipe

Ingredients:

1 cup dried elderberries (or 2 cups fresh)
4 cups water
1–2 cinnamon sticks
1 tsp dried ginger root (or fresh slices)
4–6 whole cloves
1 cup raw honey

Method:

1. Combine berries, water, cinnamon, ginger & cloves in a pot.
2. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer 45–60 minutes until reduced by half.
3. Remove from heat, cool slightly, and strain.
4. Stir in honey once lukewarm.
5. Store in a glass jar in the fridge (keeps ~2 months).

Suggested use:

Adults: 1 tbsp daily for prevention (increase if sick).

Kids: 1 tsp daily (no honey for children under 1).

Making elderberry syrup isn’t just about wellness — it’s a comforting, seasonal ritual. Every autumn, brewing a fresh batch reminds me that nature offers both nourishment and resilience.

This week you could focus on clearing stagnat energy by cleaning, opening windows or burning smudge and incense.

Honor this harvest by baking with apples or cooking a feast from your harvested vegetables.

Take a moment to express gratitude for anything you are glad to have in your world. You could do this over a cup of coffee, or perhaps play your favorite meditation.

Lets welcome the change of the season and celebrate our hard work with a bountiful harvest as we move into darker days and a season of gratitude. 🙏
