Understanding Elmwood Cemetery
The first map of Elmwood (1872) identified many paths throughout the cemetery each given a "street name" based on trees. The contemporary map (above) is the suggested route this information follows. The dotted sections are optional paths you may wish to follow.

A few things that may enhance your understanding of Elmwood Cemetery:

originally 255 plots, each 10'x10', were sold to shareholders and chosen by ballot on November 1, 1872. All of these original plots were adjacent the various paths through the cemetery. The oldest graves are located next to the various paths. The graves towards the centre of each area are the more recent graves, often family members.

to this day it is easy to locate many of the original family plots due to their size. You often see corner markers placed to identify a family enclosure.

the first interment took place only days after the balloting for lots. John Warren passed on November 7, 1872. A builder of castles, his tombstone reflects his profession. (You can see his grave marker by clicking the arrow under the picture.)

the trees were mostly planted in May of 1873 from the nursery of Mr. A.H. Wood.

over the years there have been restrictions placed on the height of memorials. While many have stood solid for over a century, please be careful when approaching any of the taller monuments particularly if they are leaning. This even applies to smaller monuments which can weigh significant amounts.

originally located outside of the Town of Perth, the town lines now include the cemetery within its boundaries. The actual cemetery property extends well beyond the currently maintained area, allowing for considerable growth and expansion.

You will see how you can move forward (or backward) through each suggested stop on the tour. Many of the stops have multiple pictures or media that you can also flip through. The suggested links make for wonderful reading and followup. You will probably find them too much to include while walking around the cemetery but are commended to your attention afterwards.

Again, thank you for the respect you are showing for those who are interred here.

I’m leaving you here. For one night I want to forget. And maybe smile.

Grief: You can’t leave me behind.

I’m tired. You are heavy. Sometimes you are just too much to bear.

Grief: I am a part of you now.

I can shut the door. Forget you for a few hours.

Grief. That is not how this works. I will always catch up to you.

Why are you doing this to me? It’s not fair. You are much too dark to take everywhere I go.

Grief: Maybe we need another way to think about this.

How would there be any other way?

Grief: Well..for starters, I am only here because of love.

No. You are here because my loved one died.

Grief: But you still feel love.

Always.

Grief: You just renamed me. That is why I am here. I am Love always. You can’t just leave me. I’m a part of you.

But it hurts so much. No more phone calls. Hugs... Plans. Empty chairs. Holidays… I can’t take this pain.

Grief. Running from me only makes it harder for you. Sit with me. I am only the love you still have to give. So feel it. Give some of it to yourself. Carry me with you. Picture me as only love and light.

So why have I been so afraid of you?

Grief. Because reality is hard to accept. This is the hardest thing to do. It takes time to get used to me. But I am here to help you remember.

I just want to be over this.

Grief: The pain you feel when a memory crosses your mind will someday make you smile. It’s because the longer you carry me with you…the wonderful memories will stay with you too.

So instead of carrying grief…I can think of it as carrying my love?

Grief: light a candle within me. Love isn’t dark. I’m only light. I remain because all your love your person still remains in you. I am love you wish to still give. I cannot be left behind. I carry on with you until the day you reunite.

So hold that light in your hand. And carry that love with you. To the very last of days.

Perth Cemetery Company, Elmwood Cemetery, 165 Dufferin Road, Perth ON, K7H 3B4
The rich history of our communities speaks from the stones found within Elmwood Cemetery, a private cemetery, formed in 1872. History records that the Perth's "Old Burying Ground" (Craig Street Cemetery) had filled and health conditions within the cemetery had become a serious issue. A group of citizens approached Town Council in 1866 but with health officials demanding that any new graveyard be developed out of town, Council rejected their requests. The citizens went on to form the Perth Cemetery Company under the Consolidated Statutes of Upper Canada (1856 as amended in 1871) forming this cemetery officially on January 26, 1872.
Since that time, the Perth Cemetery Company has been run by a volunteer Board of Trustees made up of Interment Rights Holders who thank you for your interest in this cemetery and also for your respect for those who are interred here.
Elmwood Cemetery is open to anyone in the community. All persons interred in the cemetery, approximately 10,000, are considered important and are given the care, respect and dignity they deserve. Many people enjoy walking through the graveyard, amongst this historic stones and the canopy of trees.
The cemetery is also a registered charity and can provide you with a receipt for income tax purposes should you wish to contribute to the ongoing maintenance, development and beauty of these grounds.
