Welcome to April! 🌷

While winter is still holding on at our home base, we’re seeing the signs of spring as we travel throughout the Valley - melting snow, brighter days, and that shift we’ve all been waiting for.

April is shaping up to be a busy month for Ottawa Valley First Aid. We’ll be on the road across the region, with courses running from Arnprior to Deep River, Petawawa to Barry’s Bay, and a public course in Pembroke as well.

As always, we’re looking forward to connecting with people and businesses across the Valley. Stay safe and be ready for whatever April weather comes our way!

🧊 Cold Water Facts: The 1-10-1 Rule 🧊

That spring sunshine is a "teaser," but the water is still bitter cold. If you take an unexpected swim, your body goes through three stages:

1️⃣ 1 Minute: Cold Shock. You’ll have an involuntary gasp. Stay calm and control your breathing so you don't inhale water.

🔟 10 Minutes: Functional Disability. Your fingers and limbs lose dexterity. This is your window to self-rescue or get to shore.

1️⃣ 1 Hour: Hypothermia. Even in freezing water, it takes about an hour to lose consciousness, but only if you are wearing a PFD to keep your head above water.

The Takeaway: Dress for the water temperature, not the air. A drysuit isn't just gear; it's your lifeline. Stay warm and stay safe if you’re planning on spring paddling!

A huge shout out to our team for spending Friday at the clinic to complete the training, and to Valley First Aid for making the day informative and entertaining!

Messages from Friday will be returned over the next couple of days - we appreciate your patience as we get back into the office this morning :)
