What are you practicing?

[This landed in my inbox today as part of James Clear’s weekly 3-2-1 newsletter (author of Atomic Habits).]

"Two simple rules:

1. You get better at what you practice.

2. Everything is practice.

Look around and you may be surprised by what people are “practicing" each day. If you consider each moment a repetition, what are most people training for all day long?

Many people are practicing getting mad on social media. Others are practicing the fine art of noticing how they have been wronged. Still more have mastered the craft of making plans (but never following through).

But, of course, it doesn't have to be that way.

What are you practicing?"

This applies in regulated provinces, which includes Ontario.

Did a little more work on my office this weekend, and a huge smile came across my face when I walked in this morning!

I had originally intended to keep the large front room open for things like yoga classes, but I’ve been leaning recently towards creating a more comfortable “lounge“ space to offer things like group sessions. Finally finished plumbing in the new sink and moved these two leather couches in this weekend… super excited about the possibilities for the space!

I was also delighted to find the temperature in here “Goldilocks and the Three Bears just right” this morning, which is important in the heat and humidity we’ll be experiencing this week :)

Today’s my first day supporting clients in my new downtown Peterborough office, and I couldn’t be more excited!

The room with windows is where I work with individuals and couples. It’s not done yet — needs some art on the walls and some books on the shelves – but it’s cozy and comfortable with tons of natural light, and I can feel the magic that’s going to happen in there.

The room with grey walls has more reno work left to do. It’s large enough to run workshops and small-group sessions, which I’m looking forward to offering in the upcoming months.

What’s interesting is that my last day working in a cubicle for the MNR was 11 years ago today. This is both cool and significant… I’ve done a lot in the intervening decade, but “opening shop” here today feels like the first truly solid, stable, and grounded move I’ve made yet. Wonderful!

So much gratitude for the support that landed me here… Will Doherty for sharing his gorgeous office at Unicity with me as I got my feet on the ground in private practice. Paul Fox, Cheryl Robinson, and Sean Robb for their remarkable clinical supervision and support. Classmates who’ve encouraged and held me through my recent degree and since. Brenda from the Avant-Garden Shop for the fabulous black-steel sign that adds such a sharp and professional touch! And, of course, my family for their tremendous and unwavering encouragement and emotional support through the journey.

Therapy is often viewed as “something’s broken… let’s fix it.”

I don't embrace that model and believe therapy has so much more to offer. It can be...

… help with practical approaches to navigating the stresses, challenges, and anxieties that life invariably throws our ways

… support in taking steps away from the things you don’t want to be doing and towards those that you do

… work on figuring out what path/activities will bring you the most joy, purpose, and fulfillment in life

… a safe place to explore and express thoughts and feelings you’ve never said out loud before or don't want to burden friends and family with

… help with dissecting and considering options and alternative perspectives when facing large decisions

… cultivating a way of thinking and being that moves you from coping/tolerating to thriving

I’m accepting new client and would be honoured to help you with any of these.
