He frequently talked about how the school system was outdated and no longer met students’ needs. Although he aimed to find common ground by sharing this perspective with me, it only emphasized our differences. He expressed his view of the system’s failures with resignation, stating, “That’s just how it is,” while I rejected that notion.

Collective accountability happens when we are brave enough to acknowledge our errors and committed enough to fix them.

Ontario parents of children in grades 1 to 8 are invited to participate in a new research project facilitated by researchers at the University of Guelph, entitled: “Beyond the classroom walls: Examining the effect of affiliate stigma on inclusion attitudes in caregivers of children with ADHD.”

Researchers are seeking primary caregivers of school-age children with ADHD within Ontario to answer questions about the inclusion and support of their child within the school community. During this study, participants will be asked to complete an online survey. The survey will take approximately 20 minutes to complete.

Thank you, ARCH!!

"ARCH intervened in this matter at the Divisional Court, and argued at the hearing that the Tribunal’s decisions undermined the dignity and full inclusion of persons with disabilities, focusing on an individual’s medical condition, rather than the barriers created by discriminatory policies and actions. The Court agreed with ARCH and stated that the Tribunal improperly adopted a biomedical model of disability and did not engage in a socio-political analysis, which required assessing all the facts, not simply the nature of the impairment without context."

Toronto, Ontario, Canada – The Ontario Divisional Court released a significant human rights decision styled Bokhari v Top Medical Transportation Services, 2026 ONSC 1073. This decision is a judicial review of two Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario (“Tribunal”) decisions, marking an important vic...

Preparing for meetings with the school is crucial, and this month's module highlighted why.

Often, these meetings are presented as mere formalities or quick touchbases. I teach parents and carers why these meetings are important and how to enter into them prepared and able to have meaningful discussions.

The Code acknowledges that discrimination often arises from a person's membership in a specific societal group.

When it comes to defining disability-related discrimination, the Code states that there are two common ways of understanding disability.

1. Disability as a medical condition that a person has. From this perspective, disability encompasses a broad range of conditions, some visible and some not. A disability may have been present from birth, caused by an accident, or developed over time.

2. A newer way of looking at disability is that it is not something a person has. A person with a medical condition is not necessarily prevented (or disabled) from fully taking part in society. If society is designed to be accessible and include everyone, then people with medical conditions often don’t have a problem taking part. From this point of view, disability is a problem that occurs when a person’s environment is not designed to suit their abilities.

Last night's parent group discussed how to escalate concerns within and beyond the school boards when there is a refusal to acknowledge, accommodate, and remove barriers, as well as discriminatory individuals and processes.
