I am so excited to welcome another amazing presenter! Everyone say hi to Erin 👋

Erin Brown, MSW, RSW is a Registered Social Worker with a part-time private practice in Peterborough, Ontario. Postpartum mental health and well-being became her practice focus in 2013 after hearing about mental health service gaps in the Peterborough and Kawarthas area as the Social Worker at the Pediatric Outpatient (POP) Clinic, Peterborough Regional Health Centre, in its formative years. This focus combined Erin's prior work in healthcare and mental health since 2002, including birth planning and postpartum mental health care with incarcerated women. It also aligned with her journey of being a new Mom at the time, and her own experiences of the intersections of adjustment to Motherhood, mental health, trauma and impossible expectations on women. Over the past 11 years, Erin's practice with Moms and gender-expansive parents has transformed from crisis management and mental health stabilization to more broadly include the centering of individual well-being, re/discovery of the Self within the Mothering and parenting journey, trauma processing, mindfulness for Moms and primary parents, and healthy boundaries with narcissistic family members. Erin has 2 children who are now approaching and entering their teen years. She is an outdoors enthusiast, spiritual seeker, lover of beach days and cheer Mom.

Sensorimotor Art-Based Therapy

I recently completed training in using this approach - which aims to address trauma and the nervous system without relying on the “story”. Because sometimes there is no complete conscious memory of trauma, but the body carries it anyways. Such as early attachment trauma or traumas occurring in infancy and early life. Also, traumas that have occurred when there is a lack of waking consciousness or memories are lost, fragmented. And even when there is memory, there is often more to the story, in our body/nervous system experience, than the words that tell of our experience and how we have been effected by traumas that may occur in a single moment of impact or by being chipped away at over long periods of time.

These are one series of many of my own guided bilateral (drawing with both hands) drawings that express impulses in my body and nervous system (1-2) and then offer a repairing response (3) and a spontaneous outcome (4). I can’t really tell you what it all exactly means - but I can tell you it helped me to move something within and allow a nurturing response and a healing reaction.

I’m working at bringing sensorimotor art-based therapeutic work into my practice. To me, it is an effective way of going deeper and Re-Membering.
