Happy Thanksgiving 🫶🏼

🍁 I wanted to share some reminders for you this long weekend during the hustle and bustle:

🍁 1. Use mindfulness to check how your nervous system is feeling.

🍁 2. Gauge your stress/overwhelm/anxiety/depression out of 10.

🍁 3. If you’re a 5 or over, ground: breathe, count down, put water on your face, put on music, something to change the energy in your body

🍁 4. If you’re lower than a 4, keep doing mindfulness: reflect, notice where your thoughts are and practice letting go, divert your attention to something else, go on with life ☀️

Leave a 🍁 if you find this helpful!

What you water, grows 🌺 Your positive thoughts - or negative. Once we become aware of them and we are at a regulated state, these become choices. What will you choose? 💧☀️

Mindfulness helps us find information about ourselves that allows us to make change.

Through mindfulness activities, you can discover habits, thought patterns, and emotions you have that hinder or enhance your life. It’s generally safest to use mindfulness when your distress levels are 50% or lower. Otherwise, our symptoms can actually worsen because we are breaching an emotionally dysregulated state (if we haven’t already).

Hello!! 🫶🏼🪷
I thought I’d re-introduce myself as I have a new handle and a new logo! I’m Kate and I am a registered social worker, psychotherapist in Peterborough, Ontario for adults, young adults, and older teens. I specialize in anxiety, adhd, and trauma, but can support with a variety of needs. I’m passionate to use the social work perspective in my practice because it thoroughly accounts for the relationships and environments in your life that also shaped your mind and body. Social work allows you to self-reflect, self-advocate, and find more holistic ways to deal with your mental health. I’d love to chat more with you! Please reach out 🌈

🤯 when our body go into survival mode, it tries to reserve energy and pick the easiest response to keep us safe. That doesn’t always mean it’s the one we’d prefer if we were in a clear mind. That’s the thing. When we are in this state, we aren’t in a “clear mind”. We are just trying to survive! So what do we do? If we aren’t in real danger we can likely using grounding techniques to get our brains back into a space to make helpful choices. As we know, when we are panicking, we likely can’t always make the best choices, if ever. And if we did make choices that we don’t love, we can step into forgiveness and understanding 🫶🏼.

Gabor Mate’s work on trauma has provided a significant impact on psychotherapy and clinical social work. It allows us practitioners to understand that when someone says they “have” something like BPD or ADHD, we do not fixate on only diminishing the common medically determined symptoms. We also look at the environment the person was raised in. Who lived in your house? Who provided you comfort? Who explained things to you? How did you spend your time as a child? What position do you have in the family? Our brain is largely mapped out for us by the first 5-8 years of our life. It is around this time that our brain has decided how it will react, interpret, and feel about things. Unless we consciously put effort in to change it. It is difficult to change our ways. It is uncomfortable. However, it is worth it to have that relief and more control of your life✨.

My in-person office hours have expanded. I am available everyday of the week in Central Peterborough at the Peterborough Business Hub, and virtually. People are finding each option beneficial.
