February is GUM DISEASE awareness month!

Because gum disease is painless until the final stages, it often goes unnoticed. The good news is that gum disease can be stopped. Gum disease can be easily detected by your dentist/periodontist during a dental examination. That is why regular checkups are important. Your dentist or dental hygienist may do a periodontal examination. This is when a small measuring instrument is inserted between the tooth and gum to measure how deep the pockets are between your teeth and gums. X-rays may be taken to look at the bone supporting the teeth.
If you notice these warning signs, see your dentist/periodontist immediately.

Red, swollen or tender gums
Gums that have pulled away from your teeth
A metallic taste or persistent bad breath
Pus or discharge between your teeth and gums
Loose or separating teeth

Why Your Gums Are the Foundation of a Healthy Smile!

Most people focus on their teeth when they think about oral health—but your gums do far more work than you may realize.

Your gums support and protect the teeth, anchor them in place, and act as a barrier against harmful bacteria. When gum health is compromised, even the healthiest-looking teeth are at risk.

Healthy gums are firm, pink, and do not bleed. When inflammation sets in, it can quietly progress below the surface—often without pain—until serious damage has occurred.

Gum disease doesn’t just affect your smile. It affects how long your natural teeth last.

Strong smiles start with healthy gums—and that foundation matters more than you think.

Oral Health For Seniors

Seniors are living longer than ever before. Advances in oral health care prevention and disease treatment mean that many seniors will have some or all of their natural teeth.

When we age, teeth undergo changes. Sometimes these changes are affected by chronic diseases and the use of medications. Some changes may include:

Sensitive teeth - teeth can be sensitive to hot or cold foods and/or touch

Exposed roots - gums may start to pull away from your teeth as you age. Exposed roots are exposed to bacteria that can cause cavities

Darker or yellower teeth - the colour of teeth naturally changes with age. Also, consuming staining food and drink over a lifetime can change the colour of teeth. Plaque also builds up faster as we age and can accumulate stains

Seeing an oral health professional on a regular basis is key to maintaining good oral health.
