We would like to take this time to congratulate Blair Wong for winning the 2025 International Optician of the Year award at SILMO Paris!

Blair is a licensed optician and the Chair of the Department of Eye Health Technology at the Benjamin Franklin Cummings Institute of Technology. He also serves as the Executive Director of the Opticians Association of Massachusetts and Board President of GoodVision USA, a nonprofit that provides vision care to underserved communities around the world.

What makes Blair’s achievement even more inspiring is his personal story — he lives with retinitis pigmentosa, a condition that has caused complete vision loss, yet he continues to teach optics, mentor future professionals, and lead initiatives that expand global access to vision care. His passion, resilience, and dedication truly embody the spirit of the optical profession.

We also want to recognize our own Bill Snelgrove, who was an honoured nominee for this year’s award. Being selected among such inspiring leaders in our field is an incredible accomplishment in itself, and we couldn’t be prouder!

Congratulations again to Blair Wong on this well-deserved recognition — your vision and commitment inspire us all!

Seeing Floaters?

Here’s What You Need to Know!

Have you ever noticed tiny spots, threads, or cobweb-like shapes drifting across your vision? These are called floaters.

They happen when tiny clumps form in the clear gel inside your eye and cast shadows on the retina.

Most of the time, floaters are harmless and just part of the natural aging process.

But if you suddenly notice a lot more floaters, flashes of light, or a shadow across your vision, it could be a sign of something more serious—like a retinal tear or detachment.

If that happens, see an eye doctor right away. It’s always better to get checked and make sure your eyes stay healthy!
