We support youth & young adults (ages 12 - 29) so they're empowered to better tend needs (theirs & others'), access support, work through conflict, & generate solutions. It's a free, voluntary & volunteer-led community service. Due to funding limits, we can only serve youth & young adults (ages 12 - 29) in Peterborough County. When funding increases, we can serve adults over 29 years again. Here's

what we offer youth & young adults (ages 12 -29):
- Conflict Resolution professional development in schools
- Peer listening (Sidewalk Talk)
- Listening Circles
- Conflict Coaching
- Supported Dialogues
- Peer Mediation in schools
- Neighbour Mediation (incl. housemates, hosts, landlords, residence...)
- Restorative Processes (such as circles for schools & justice diversion)

HOW IT WORKS
1. We listen & get some basic info over the phone.
3. We meet with you to see if our service fits what you want (about 1 hr).
4. If our services fit, and you want them, we set it up. If you're looking for a dialogue, mediation, or circle, we may take some extra time to make sure our service is a good fit, and that you'd like to go ahead, before starting. We offer a structure for dialogue, mediation, & circles that slows things down so everybody has a chance to be heard. You work together to create your own solutions. You can just call us yourself, or someone can refer you to us. We do not address:
- Cases before the courts
- Cases involving lawyers
- Cases involving organizational policy concerns &./or legislated standards
- Domestic conflict (intimate relationship separation, custody, visitation...)
- Domestic violence

Our Story

We offer supported conversations and mediation for adult neighbours in conflict, and peer mediation programing for local high schools. We also facilitate neighbourhood listening circles, community dialogues, empathy cafes, “Sidewalk Talk” listening stations, conflict clinics, and conflict resolution training.

Community Mediation is rooted in the principles of Restorative Justice and is based on the Transformative Mediation approach (Baruch-Bush & Folger, 1994; Barusch-Bush & Folger, 2005). Our practice in Peterborough is also informed by compassionate Nonviolent Communication (Rosenberg, 2000). Community Mediation Peterborough is a member of the Ontario Community Mediation Coalition: http://www.ontcmc-comc.com/index.html

Community Mediation increases safety, well-being, & community resilience. It's a free, voluntary & volunteer-led community service for community members (a modest fee is charged to businesses and organizations). Here's how it works: 1. Mediation is voluntary - it's your choice. 2. We meet with and listen to each person privately to see if mediation fits 3. A mediation is booked 4. Each person tells their story & is heard 5. Mediators are neutral. They help each listen to the other’s feelings, values & needs 6. Participants are supported to think up solutions together 7. Together, participants choose and commit to solutions. People can self refer and people can be referred by City Councilors, Housing Managers, friends, neighbours, landlords, and so on. About our volunteer mediators: - They come from the community they serve. - They represent diverse ages & backgrounds. - They meet Ontario Community Mediation Coalition (OCMC) training standards. - They receive ongoing mentorship & training. - They practice co-mediation in teams of two. This program is a partnership between John Howard Society of Peterborough, Green Up, Peterborough Police Services, and Peterborough Housing.

The adult mediation programs are funded in part by The United Way of Peterborough, The Green Up Neighbour Plan Project, and The John Howard Society of Peterborough.
