Good Morning,

Peterborough Public Health has officially declared our Enterovirus outbreak here at Extendicare Peterborough over as we have gone 8 consecutive days without any new cases. In total, we had 25 residents and 6 staff members from the third floor affected due to the outbreak, resulting in a total attack rate of 19% for the affected area. There were no resident hospitalizations or resident deaths due to the outbreak. Although the outbreak has ended, I do want to emphasize the importance of remaining away from the facility if you have experienced any flu-like symptoms within the last 10 days. Masking is no longer mandatory on our third floor but is still encouraged for our staff and visitors as Peterborough Public Health has seen a spike in respiratory illness within the community. Before entering the facility, please continue to wash your hands with the available hand sanitizer at the entrance.

Kind regards,

Nathan

Outbreak update!

I wanted to take a moment to update everyone on our Enterovirus outbreak affecting our third floor. In total, we have had a total of 25 residents affected, 15 of those residents are on Violet Way and 10 are on Lilac Lane. As of today, we have now had 11 residents resolved from isolation and currently have 14 residents remaining in isolation. Hopefully this positive trend in resolved cases is an indication of us heading in the right direction regarding declaring our outbreak over. In terms of actually coming out of outbreak, we will have to go 7 consecutive days with no new residents cases. I will keep everyone updated on a regular basis.
As previously stated, the outbreak is still contained to our third floor, both Violet Way and Lilac Lane. The second floor remains unaffected. Medical masks will remain mandatory on third floor at all times. Universal masking will continue to be optional for second floor.
All staff and visitors must continue to wear the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) that coincides with droplet/contact precautions when in the room of an affected resident. This includes a surgical mask, gown, face shield and gloves. Isolation periods for symptomatic residents will be 5 days minimum or 24hrs asymptomatic. I want to emphasize the importance of remaining away from the facility if you have experienced any flu-like symptoms within the last 10 days.
As always, temporary leaves for residents of an affected unit to a private home are acceptable but not recommended, we encourage rescheduling non-urgent medical appointments. Urgent appointments may continue with precautions (clean hands prior to leaving facility; transportation and receiving facility must be advised). Non-Medical absences such as shopping and hair appointments should be rescheduled as much as possible.
During the outbreak, PPH recommends all non-essential visitors to refrain from visiting an affected unit until after the outbreak. Essential caregivers are an exception to this recommendation. When entering the building, please adhere to the signage and directions posted at the building's entrance. Medical masks have been deemed mandatory when on the third floor, as previously stated. We ask that you visit residents in their rooms to decrease the amount of people in the hallways, dining rooms, lounges, and communal areas. If anyone has any questions while on the units, please relay any questions or concerns to our Registered Staff on the floor for clarification. We will keep you all informed on a regular basis over the course of this outbreak, your safety and wellbeing is paramount to us.

Thank you,
Nathan Delarosbil

Good afternoon,
I have received the results from Peterborough Public Health (PPH) regarding the multiplex swabs that were collected earlier this week to determine the causative agent for our outbreak. The results have confirmed that we are in an Enterovirus outbreak. Although symptoms for Enterovirus are usually mild cold symptoms such as fever, congestion, sore throat and cough, as with any kind of infection, there is always a risk of complications so please comply with all mandated outbreak measures when in the facility to mitigate any spread.
As of right now, the outbreak is still contained to our third floor, both Violet Way and Lilac Lane. The second floor remains unaffected. As previously stated, Medical masks are mandatory on third floor at all times. However, masks will not be mandatory for second floor but are recommended. In total, there are 8 residents on Violet Way and 5 residents on Lilac Lane who are affected.
