Do you sit hunched over at a desk all day? Are you looking down at your phone for extended periods of time? You may have noticed your neck being tight, headaches, or a deep, achy pain in your upper back.

Being hunched over or leaning forward for prolonged periods of time stretches the levator scapulae muscle, causing pain and inflammation. By keeping the levator scapulae muscles stretched and flexible, you can prevent them from becoming stiff and painful. Time to stretch!

Sit or stand up straight, while keeping your shoulders down and your hands by your side. Turn your head towards your left shoulder about 45 degrees. Tilt the chin downward until you feel a stretch on the back right side of your neck. Hold for about 30 seconds. Perform 3 sets, 3 times a day.

If you feel pain on the left side of your neck, perform the exercise by turning your head to the right.

A soft bulge down your midline. A core that feels weaker than it used to. Back pain that showed up postpartum.

👉 These can all be signs of diastasis recti after pregnancy.

Diastasis recti is common postpartum. And no, it doesn’t mean you’ve done something wrong.

What matters most isn’t the size of the gap. It’s how your core manages pressure, movement, and daily load.

In this article, we explain:
• What diastasis recti actually is
• Common signs to watch for postpartum
• Myths about core exercises and lifting
• How pelvic health physiotherapy supports recovery
• What healing realistically looks like over time

Time to get the heart pumping with some small hops! These little jumps require no equipment and can be performed wherever and whenever. Jumping builds strength and improves muscle tone, is an excellent calorie-burner, improves balance and muscle coordination, metabolism and heart health.

So... let's get hopping!
1. Stand with your feet shoulder distance apart
2. Place your hands on your waist and slightly bend your knees
3. Hop upwards

Try to do as many small hops as you can in 30 seconds. And remember: we're going for speed, not height.

Who is up for a challenge? Try the one-legged squat!

This exercise is good for all athletes, but especially effective for runners as it works the same muscles used for running: hips, hamstrings, quadriceps, gluteus maximus, and calves. It also helps strengthen core muscles and increase flexibility.

Let's give it a go!

1. Stand with your feet shoulder distance apart and slightly bend your knees. Hold your body upright and relax your shoulders.
2. Raise the right ankle and move it back towards the sky.
3. Slowly bend the left knee, moving down in a squatting motion (almost like you're sitting in a chair). Keep your body straight and don't let your left knee pass your left toe.
4. Come back up to the starting position.
5. Perform 10 squats on the left and then switch to the right leg.

*Please note: only perform this exercise if it's safe to do so, and remember to always listen to your body.

We see a lot of ankle strains and sprains. By strengthening your ankle muscles and the adjoining ligaments, you can prevent injuries and improve stability and mobility.

The following exercises will help you regain movement and control of the ankle.

Ankle Inversion:
1. Sit on the floor and attach the resistance band to the inside of your foot
2. Attach the other end of the band to a heavy table leg so it’s perpendicular to your leg
3. Hold your leg straight out with your heel on the floor
4. Using only your ankle, rotate your foot inward as far as you can
5. Hold for 2-3 seconds and return your ankle to the starting position

Ankle Eversion:
1. Sit on the floor and attach a resistance band on the outside of your foot
2. Attach the other end of the band to a heavy table leg
3. Hold your leg straight out with your heel on the floor
4. Using only your ankle, rotate your ankle outwards as you can (stretching the band using only the foot)
5. Hold for 2-3 seconds and return to the starting position.

The calves are one of the most overused but overlooked muscles in the body. Tightness and discomfort in the calves are often the result of overuse.

When the calves are too tight, it can lead to injuries including shin splints, calf pulls, and stress fractures. That's why it's important to stretch!

1. Stand facing a wall and place one foot in front of the other
2. Place your hands on the wall at eye level
3. Extend forward until you feel a stretch in the calf of the back leg
4. Hold for 15 to 30 seconds
5. Repeat 2 to 4 times and then switch legs

As we begin to see some restrictions lifted, pt Health is actively working on expanding the number of clinics available for in-person care, including our clinic!

In accordance with public health guidance, we are making numerous changes to how our clinic operates and have implemented enhanced measures to ensure the health and safety of our patients and staff.

That’s why we have implemented the S.A.F.E.R. approach, designed to allow our team to safely deliver the best possible care for you. We encourage you to read about the S.A.F.E.R. approach here: https://bit.ly/2LEcJH1

**Please note that these enhanced measures include limiting the number of patients we see in the clinic, based on space and ability to maintain physical distancing. Our clinicians also continue to provide a range of services through virtual care.**
